Hi,

Windows 10 pro 64 1809 - recently updated from 1803.

Running certain EXE's was giving DLL errors - C:\windows\system\netapi32.dll is either not designed to run on windows or it contains an error. try installing the program again using the original installation media... error status 0xc0000020.
Also on samcli.dll and others.

Since these are windows components, the "installing the program again" message doesn't make sense.

Ran sfc /scannow, in safe mode. Fails at 74% with "Windows resource protection could not perform the requested operation".

Ran dism /online /cleanup-image /checkhealth. it says
No component store corruption detected.
The operation completed successfully.

Ran sfcfix. It crashed on the last step. Sorry, no log

CBS folder is attached.

DLL errors persist. Would also like to get a clean SFC scan

Thanks in advance.

Hello and welcome!

Please start with the following:

GSmartControl
Follow the instructions below to check your SMART status with GSmartControl:

  • Download the portable version of GSmartControl and save it on your Desktop;
  • Extract the zip file to your Desktop. Open the folder gsmartcontrol-1.1.3-win64 which should be located on your Desktop and double-click gsmartcontrol.exe to launch the program.
  • Identify your drive in the list (if recognized by the tool), and hover your mouse over it.
  • You should see something called: SMART status. It will either read: Enabled, in which case you should do the following:
  • Double-click on it to bring up its window (usually you'll find your drive by its size or its brand name);
  • Go to the Self-Tests tab, then select Extended Self-test in the Test type drop-down list and click on Execute (this test can take a few hours to complete);
  • Once the test is over, the results will be displayed at the bottom of the window. Please copy and paste these results in your next reply or take a screenshot;
  • Also, go in the Attributes tab and if you have any entries highlighted in red or pink, take a screenshot of the GSmartControl window and attach it in your next reply;
  • Please note: If the SMART Status reads: Unsupported, stop and let me know.

Hi,

The smart status on all items is within range. Can we proceed on the assumption that it is NOT a disk error? Or do the above problem symptoms ALWAYS indicate a disk error?

Yes, I did see that as a possible cause. But are there others? Like I said, the SMART status is all within range. Since the problem started earlier today, one can assume that if it were HDD failure, it would be reflected in the SMART status.

System is a recent Dell still under warranty. To get the drive replaced. I would have to run Dell Diagnostics. And they also say everything is OK.

The building is about to close and I will have to leave soon. The test is running but I doubt that will be the cause.

I see.

If the test passes, please run the following:

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put

tags around the log to break up the text.

SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

    Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

As I stated in my first post, SFCfix crashed. It did not leave a log file. The crash happened so fast I could not make out the error message. The CBS logs are attached to my first post.

I know, but this is different. This is a fix for your corrupt file executed through SFCFix, which should work... We are aware of the crashing issue with running SFCFix without scripts.

Oops. Oh I'm sorry, my bad. I should read your message thoroughly first. Sorry. One minute.........

Got past 74% but ...

so there was file corruption. i don't know if the users hit the power button during a build update or what. was it due to hardware? unfortunately can't run dell diagnostics remotely

ok so sfc ran past 40%, so something is afoot. let's check the results before i do the sfcfix. ok?

Hi!

No, you should first run SFCFix with my zip and then SFC Scan.

There is severe corruption and based on the chkdsk results, your HDD was damaged somehow, the question is whether it was irreparably damaged or not. Please repeat chkdsk once again.

ok i'm going to shut it down and run full dell diagnostics on monday morning and call dell. either they'll replace the ram or disk or both. i should at least reseat the memory first.

should i even attempt another chkdsk? no, what if it crashes in the middle? double yikes!

going forward, got a question. i keep builds at bay for the max 365 days. i'm at 1809, just came in this week.

if i broke down and applied the latest build, would this fix the o/s corruption problem?
if so, should i do it with win 10 update assistant, or download the iso? or does it make a difference?

to be continued.

thank you for your help, i will make a donation.

Appreciate the donation!

The thing is, I don't believe you can upgrade right now, because the OS is trashed so badly that it cannot be upgraded.

I personally recommend the iso, because it saves you the time if you need to redo it (in case it fails).

Let me know what the outcome of this is.

i will. will be in touch on monday. thank you.

the os is trashed that badly? wow. y'know i checked the event log before i even posted, was looking for fatal errors, and nothing stood out. so this is recent, and 1809 coming in didn't help.
