[SOLVED] Windows 10 Not Updating & Causing Boot Issues on Restart After Installation

This issue started sometime with the October Windows updates. I did do some program uninstalls using Windows Add/Remove to free up some disc space on c: with no issues. Decided to reboot after and the issue began so not 100% sure if it was a coincidence with the add/removes or not.

After the updates install and the system reboots I have to go into the advanced startup and select (8) Disable Early Launch Anti-Malware Protection. The system then boots but reverts the update. I scanned the computer with Malwarebytes and Windows built-in anti-virus and nothing shows up.

Here are the pending updates:

Apple, Inc. - USBDevice - 538.0.0.0
Pending download

2023-10 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 22H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5031356)
Download error - 0x800f0845

2023-10 Cumulative Update for .NET Framework 3.5, 4.8 and 4.8.1 for Windows 10 Version 22H2 for x64 (KB5031224)
Pending install

Thx - Derrick.

Hi,

Download the

Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop:

Download the 64 bit version: - Farbar Recovery Scan Tool Link
  • Note: Your antivirus program may report FRST incorrectly as an infection. If so, disable the real-time protection when downloading and running FRST.
  • Right-click to run the tool as administrator. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Note: Ensure that the Addition.txt check box is checked at the bottom of the form within the Optional Scan area.
  • Press the Scan button.
  • Please wait for the tool to finish. It will produce two logfiles called FRST.txt and Addition.txt in the same directory the tool is run from (which should be the desktop)
  • Post the logfiles FRST.txt and Addition.txt as attachment in your next reply.

Hi,

I would start to free up space on your system drive, you'll need at least 20/30 GB of free space to avoid issues.

Rich (BB code):
Drive c: (Windows) (Fixed) (Total:111.08 GB) (Free:5.69 GB) (Model: Samsung SSD 840 EVO 120GB) NTFS

Let's start with cleaning up some remnants and the %temp% folders with FRST.

Start the

Farbar Recovery Scan Tool again.

Warning: This script was written specifically for this system. Do not run this script on another system.
  • Download the attachment fixlist.txt and save it to your desktop.
  • Right-click on FRST.exe and select "Run as administrator".
  • Press the Fix button.
  • If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally.
  • When finished, a log called Fixlog.txt will appear in the same directory the tool is run from.
  • Post the logfile Fixlog.txt as attachment in your next reply.

Ran it but the system needed a reboot and since I'm working on it remotely, I can't access the advanced startup options. I won't be back to the machine until Monday.

I'll send the file then.

THx!

Please see the attached. Had to disable early launch anti-malware protection to boot up.

Hi,

You have not used my fixlist.txt in post#4, but a different file (from another thread) since it is another script?

Yes, please run the Fixlist from post #4 again and post the result.

Please see the attached.

Not sure if it matters but Windows tried to install an update upon rebbot then spent time trying to make a repair. Ultimately, had to go to startup setting #8 then Windows undid the update.

Great, this is the correct result. But now we'll need to free up some space on the systemdrive, how many free space is available at the drive below this moment?

Rich (BB code):
Drive c: (Windows) (Fixed) (Total:111.08 GB) (Free:5.69 GB) (Model: Samsung SSD 840 EVO 120GB) NTFS

Do you have the ability to move data to another drive, to have at least 20GB of free space on the System Drive?

The data files are already on d: as well as the softwaredistribution folder. I'd probably need to migrate to a larger SSD.

Rich (BB code):
Drive c: (Windows) (Fixed) (Total:111.08 GB) (Free:5.69 GB) (Model: Samsung SSD 840 EVO 120GB) NTFS
Drive d: () (Fixed) (Total:1863.01 GB) (Free:1840.24 GB) (Model: TOSHIBA DT01ACA200) NTFS

I would definitely recommend to use a larger SSD. However, on the D drive is just only a little bit of data stored?

D: has 1.79TB available. Don't know of an easy way to move all of the program files off C: to D:

Maybe I should get a 500GB and clone c: and then circle back with you?

Hi,

Cloning the current SSD to a new one with more capacity is the best option I think.

The most common cause of (download) error 0x800f0845 is insufficient hard disk space to handle the update! So let's hope cloning the SSD to a bigger one will resolve this issue as well.
