Windows 10 not accepting win 7 product key after upgrade

Hello,
i upgraded from genuine win 7 home to win 10 home with a clean install. Win 10 after updating, stated that i need to activate. I used the key that is on the sticker but i got the error 0x803FA067 (the key being invalid). As far as i know, win 10 silently kept being free for genuine versions of win 7 and 8/8.1. I have not done any major changes to the hardware (switched from hdd to ssd). Can i still use my win 7 key, or do i need to buy a new one? Thanks in advance

The policy was changed. You can however upgrade to Windows 11 if your computer is hardware ready.

But not with a Windows 7 key if the PC has never been activated with Windows 10 before with a digital license.
