Hi Guys, Thomas again.

You helped me before with my Windows Update issue on my PC this May. Now I'm again stuck on my notebook with the same problem. Each time I try to run "2022-09 Kumulatives Update für Windows 10 Version 21H1 für x64-basierte Systeme (KB5017308)" I get the error 0x80073701 and the usual internet forum fixes .

So here I go according to posting instructions with my data:
I've ran "sfc /scannow" again which found no integrity violations anymore.
Afterwards I also ran "Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth" again which gave me "The operation completed successfully.".
But still the update KB5017308 gives me the error 0x80073701.

Again I've also attached COMPONENTS from C:\Windows\System32 in case you need it.

I hope someone can provide me a fix so I can continue updating my notebook and get this KB5017308 update finally installed.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the attached file, SFCFixScript.txt, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFixScript.txt - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFixScript.txt.
  5. Drag the file SFCFixScript.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a log should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this into your next post for me to analyse please - put [CODE][/CODE] tags around the log to break up the text.

Tried to run the update again but still fails. While updating a .NET Update was also availabel and that installed successfully.
Please advise on the next steps

Could you please provide the latest CBS logs? You will need to do this for each update failure.

Was there no CBS log? Just .persist ones?
 
It was imported but got removed after the update attempt. After the update failed all HKLM\COMPONENTS keys are gone in regedit.
Here's a new CBS5.zip after I've failed with another update and ran the fix again to re-import the COMPONENTS registry keys. The .log file did not get zipped before but should be there now.

That's odd, not sure why they would have been removed, but it seems we've moved onto a different key this time.

Once again the entire HKLM\COMPONENTS tree is gone after a failed update attempt and re-appaers if I re-run the fix script after the failed update.

Do you mean the entire COMPONENTS hive or the subkeys underneath the hive? If you mean the hive itself, then it is normal for it to be loaded and unloaded as and when required. There's a few registry hives which behave like that.

Let's try the update assistant tool which sometimes fixes issues like the one you're experiencing.

Windows 10 Update Assistant to your desktop.
  • Right-click on Windows10Upgrade9252.exe and select the option: Run as administrator.
  • Press the Update now button, click after the compatibility check on Next.
  • The Update Assistant will now download the latest Feature Update.
  • After verifying the download, the Feature Update will be installed.
  • When this process is ready, click on the Restart now button to complete the installation.
 
Hey great, that did the trick!
It failed first, probably due to not enough freespace on the disk. But on the second attempt the update finally worked. After that I was also able to install all other updates I was offered and I'm at 21H2 with no further pending updates.

Regarding the COMPONENTS hive. Yes it was the entire hive that disappeared after the update. I browsed around the registry quite a few times before and never noticed a COMPONENTS hive before. I guess that's some staging hive for the update system then. Do you maybe have a link where I could read up on how these things work?

Well, I'm fully updated now and my notebook is happy again.
