Hello,

I am getting the following when trying to use Windows Update in Windows 10:

"Some update files are missing or have problems. We'll try to download the update again later.

Error code: (0x80073712)"

Would you please be able to help me get past this code so I can download updates again? Thanks in advance.

Hi and welcome to Sysnative. Sorry for the delay. If you still need assistance please start with the following.

SFC Scan
1. Right-click on the Start
w8start.png
button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter
sfc /scannow

3. Once it finishes, copy and paste the following into the command-prompt window and press Enter.
copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"

4. Once this has completed please go to your Desktop and you will find CBS.txt => Right-click on this file and choose Send To...Compressed (zipped folder). Please upload this zipped file CBS.zip to this thread

Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

When I try sfc /scannow it says Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.

When I go to Send to, the only option is Bluetooth device, is there another way to make it a zip?

I did Save as and did .zip as the file end, is that the same thing?

Thank you. The log was helpful. I see the following.
Code:
2016-04-27 19:54:46, Error                 CSI    00000002@2016/4/27:23:54:46.317 (F) base\wcp\componentstore\storelayout.cpp(4366): Error STATUS_SXS_COMPONENT_STORE_CORRUPT originated in function ComponentStore::CRawStoreLayout::OpenCanonicalDataKey expression: (null)
[gle=0x80004005]

As a result I would like to see your components hive. Please do the following.

Retrieve Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to SendSpace and just provide the link here.

As you are having issues zipping the file, just upload the entire file to SendSpace and provide link.

I rebooted but i still get the file is in-use error.

OK, please do the following instead.

Retrieve Components Hive

  • Please download the Freeware RegBak from here: Acelogix Software - Download products
You will find it at the bottom of the page that the link brings you to.
  • Go ahead and install this program and accept all the defaults. After the last install screen the program should open.
  • Click the New Backup button. Accept the defaults and simply click Start.
  • When it says Finished successfully, click the Close button.
  • This will bring you back to the main screen of the program. You will see one entry in this list with the date that you did it. Right-click on this line-item and select Explore Backup...
  • This will bring you into the folder where the backup was made. You should see a Users folder and a Windows folder along with a couple other files. Double-click on the Windows folder to open it. Then open the System32 folder and then config folder. You should see around 6 files in here, one of which is named COMPONENTS.
  • Copy the COMPONENTS file to your Desktop. If the COMPONENTS file does not exist, please fetch it instead from C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS.
  • Now right click on the COMPONENTS file that is on your desktop and select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
  • Then please upload the zip file (COMPONENTS.zip) to your favourite file sharing website (it will be too big to upload here). Examples of services to upload to are Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and then just provide the link in your reply.
  • You can close any open windows you have as well as the RegBack program now.

As suspected your COMPONENTS hive is corrupt beyond repair. Here's what we need to do to get you back and working. Please do the following.

1. Download the Media Creation Tool to your desktop. Go ahead and run this. Note: Click the Download tool now button when you are at this link.
2. Accept the license agreement
3. Keep the default which is to Upgrade your PC and click Next.
4. Go ahead and run this through and let me know when complete.

Doing it this way will keep all your data and programs intact. As always though, make sure you have a backup of any critical data in case something unexpected happens.

Thanks.

Thanks. I have completed these steps. Please let me know what to do next.

Great. With some luck your Windows Update issue should now be resolved. Check for updates and install any that are there. Let me know how it goes.

Thanks for your help. The Updates now work and it's only been a few minutes but things in general tend to be running much more smoothly. I appreciate it. What causes these corruptions to occur? Could it have been that when I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10 it didn't install correctly?

It definitely could have been that something didn't go quite right with the upgrade. But there are so many possible reasons that it could have happened. I'm glad it's all working. Take care.
