[SOLVED] Windows 10 cumulative updates fail with error 0x80070246

Hi Team,

Firstly let me say I really appreciate the work you guys do here in this site, no other forum comes close.

I've been trying to defeat my issue for a couple of months now, and have tried so many thing (short of a fresh install :) And since I'm running the latest 20h2 build I'm stuck not even being able to run a repair install. This is due the the bug that these latest CU's are supposed to fix.

I've got a feeling my extreme RAM OC was the reason for the issues I'm having now. I've now set everything to stock, ran a memtest for hours and have attached all required logs to get the ball rolling.

Looking forward to let you guys show me your sklillz.

First, please create a system restore point - (2) Windows System Restore - Create a Restore Point (Windows 10, 8.1, 8, 7 & Vista) | Sysnative Forums

For info WU error 0x80070246 often appears because the downloaded WU file is corrupted or because of an issue with a device driver or software.

Turn off your non-Windows firewall and your anti-virus when re-downloading and installing the update(s) again.

1. Run the Win Updt Troubleshooter - Windows Update Troubleshooter for Windows 10 (microsoft.com)
2. How To Clear Windows Update Cache In Windows 10 (intowindows.com)
3. Manually download the update from Microsoft Update Catalog and install (Google KB numbers)

that's the error when I used dism to add the lastest CU package directly from a windows PE environment.

That was me trying to get usb's working inside the VM, yup BSOD as soon as I plugged in the device :)

That is a shame RE: the win update Analysts. We can just leave this here, maybe someone will be able to solve it later on. I'll keep plugging away at it, If i get a solution I'll be sure to update the thread as weel.

Hi!

This is very likely related to RAM. Did you replace RAM recently? If not, run a Memtest once again, but leave it running for much longer.

Please do the following as well:

Step#1 - Capture Process Monitor Trace
1. Download and run Process Monitor. Leave this running while you perform the next steps.
2. Try updating the system just like you have in the past.
3. Stop Process Monitor as soon as it fails. You can simply do this by clicking the magnifying glass on the toolbar as shown below.

4. Select the File menu...Save... and save the file to your desktop. This is likely the default location. The name (unless changed) will be LogFile.PML. This is fine.
5. Zip up and provide the link to the LogFile.PML file as well as your CBS.log Examples of services to upload to are Dropbox or OneDrive or SendSpace.

Please do the following:

Step#1 - FRST Fix
NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system
1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
2. Download the attached fixlist.txt and save it to the Desktop.
Note. It's important that both files, FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work (in this case...the desktop).
3. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
4. Press the Fix button just once and wait. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
5. When finished FRST64 will generate a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please post the contents of it in your reply.
6. Please retry the updates with Process Monitor enabled and provide CBS.log and LogFile.PML.

Well, I have cracked the case!!

Seems like someone found a Reg hack to fool the windows in place upgrade, big thanks to SUMIT DHIMAN over at your windows guide.

I need to work on my google-fu He has had this fix since October 31 :)

[Fix] Can't Repair install Windows 10 20H2 - Your Windows Guide

After getting a successful in place upgrade done, I was able to run all the latest updates and currently sitting on 19042.746.

If anyone from MS is looking, maybe you can integrate this "hack" into your windows 10.iso's and save someone else the pain.
