[SOLVED] Windows 10 cumulative update problems

I'm one of apparently a number of people who continually have problems installing any cumulative Windows 10 update package. I've tried the last three without success. I am running Windows 10 Professional 64-bit, version 1607, build 14393.222, 16 GB RAM

Symptom: The update seems to work, even reaching the end of the progress bar, but then it says "failed to install." I did run the Windows Update troubleshooter, and scannow. The troubleshooter did fix a problem with the update database, but that did not solve my problem. Scannow showed no errors. I've manually downloaded the updates, but that doesn't help. I'm technical enough to try various fixes if anyone can help me diagnose this. I really don't want to reinstall the OS!

Update: I fixed the problem. I searched on "Failed call to CryptCATAdminAddCatalog", and found a page where someone said "the catroot2 catalog is corrupted." Searched on catroot2: C:\Windows\system32\CatRoot2 folder is an impotant folder which helps to fetch regular Windows Updates.

The same page said to follow the steps in this article to fix the problem. Even though the article was written for Windows Server 2008, the same steps apply to Windows 10.

I first used the 'verify' step to confirm that the catalog database was indeed corrupted. The step "Repair the catalog database by using Esentutl" fixed the catalog, and then I was finally able to apply the cumulative update.
