Windows 10 22H2 - KB5033372 update fails with 0x8007000d

Hello,

The problem is pretty simple to describe. Windows Update fails to install 2023-12 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 22H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5033372), returning error 0x8007000d. Even downloading it from the Microsoft Update Catalog and attempting to install it manually resulted in failure, with a "Some updates were not installed" message.

I followed the steps in the sticky and attached the requested files.

Upload your COMPONENTS hive.
  • Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
  • Please copy this file to your desktop.
  • Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
  • Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To > Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
  • If the file is too large to upload here, upload the file to www.wetransfer.com and post the link in your next reply.

SFCFix and save it to your desktop.

Warning: This fix was written specifically for this system. Do not run this fix on another system.
  • Save any work you have open, and close all programs.
  • Download the attachment SFCFix.zip and save it to your desktop.
  • Drag the SFCFix.zip file over the SFCFix.exe executable and release it.

  • SFCFix will launch, let it complete.
  • Once done, a file will appear on your desktop, called SFCFix.txt.


    Afterwards reboot the system and attempt to update. If it fails attach a new copy of the CBS logs.

Ok, I ran the script, and then rebooted. First thing I encountered when opening Windows Update was this.

Pressed Retry, and it started downloading KB5033372 and another update, which I can't remember unfortunately. I was eventually prompted to restart, and after restarting the Start menu no longer runs. Furthermore, Task manager can no longer be opened, and in fact when attempting to launch it from the taskbar, I received this error.

And I can confirm taskmgr.exe is no longer there. I also tried to launch Windows Update via Windows+R ms-settings:windowsupdate, but I also received this error:

Here's a new copy of the CBS logs, and SFCFix.txt in case you need it. I have not attempted another SFC scan or to run DISM again yet.

Please reboot the system and then run the System File Checker SFC /Scannow in an elevated prompt and post the result. If it fails attach a new copy of the CBS logs.
 
Please run the following DISM command as well and post the result. If it fails attach a new copy of the CBS log.

Crystal DiskInfo and save it to your Desktop.
  • Run the installer to install the program.
  • When finished, open the installed program by double clicking on it.

This looks good, as well as the result of SFC and DISM. But you have still issues with the startmenu, task manager etc?
 
That is correct. No Start Menu, Settings, no Task Manager, no Snipping Tool, no Image Viewer, probably more.
 
Hmm, that's odd! Please try to perform a repair install.

Windows 10 Repair Install
This will reinstall and update the operating system and fix any corruptions, without removing any file or program. But make always a backup of all your important data!
  • Go to this Microsoft page and under the title Create Windows 10 installation media press on Download tool now.
  • Save the tool on your Desktop and double click to run it.
  • On the License terms page, if you accept the license terms, select Accept.
  • On the What do you want to do page, select Create installation media (USB....) and then select Next.
  • Choose the ISO file option. Once the download is complete, right click the ISO and select the option Mount.
  • Open the Windows File Explorer and open mounted ISO, and run the setup.exe file.
  • Follow the instructions and click on the option Change what to keep.
  • Select the option Keep personal files and apps and click next.
  • Windows Setup will now start the in-place upgrade installation to repair Windows.
 
Yes, please let me know the result and if you are able to start the installation from the USB-stick.
 
Mmm, are you able to create the USB-stick with Windows 10 22H2 on another system and then try again?
 
Open an elevated command prompt, run the following command and copy and paste all the values under the "CurrentVersion" key in your next post.
