[SOLVED] [Windows 10 21H2] Issues after failed update

Hello,

I've been having issues ever since an update failed to install and Windows tried to revert the changes, but I guess that didn't happen properly. The update in question is KB5007253. It shows up as installed in the Control Panel, but Windows Update keeps trying to install it, failing with error 0x80070002 every time. I tried uninstalling it via Control Panel and that resulted in an error. I also tried re-installing it manually but it's telling me it's already installed. Everything else appears to work fine, except I'm unable to enable Windows Components I need via Control Panel, as I get the same 0x80070002 error.

I've tried running "sfc /scannow", it completes telling me there's corrupt files that cannot be repaired. See SFC_CBS.log.

I also tried running "DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth" (as well as other recommended DISM commands), and they all fail with with error 2 (The system cannot find the file specified.). See DISM_CBS.log and dsim.log.

I'm also attaching my COMPONENTS file that I see is frequently requested in other threads.

Any help would be appreciated. Please let me know if anything else is required to help troubleshoot the issue.

Thanks,
Billy

Hi,

I will look into your problem.
Note: I'm currently in training so my posts will need to be approved by the Sysnative instructors.

Hi,

Step 1. Download
56f31e53c97da-SFCFix.PNG
SFCFix and save it to your desktop.

WARNING! The following fix is specific to the user's system in this thread only. No one else should follow these instructions, as it could damage your system.
  • Save any work you have open, and close all programs.
  • Drag the SFCFix.zip file over the SFCFix.exe executable and release it.

  • SFCFix will launch, let it complete.
  • Once done, a file will appear on your desktop, called SFCFix.txt.
  • Post the logfile (SFCFix.txt) as attachment in your next reply.

Step 2. Reboot your computer and run the System File Checker.
  • Click the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  • When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator.
  • When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following command into it, and press enter.
    Code:
    sfc /scannow
  • Take a screenshot of the commandprompt window and paste it into your next reply.

Hi Maxstar,

I ran the tool, completed without a prompt for a restart. I'm attaching the generated log file.

Thanks for looking in this.

Hi Maxstar,

Just a quick update that the new cumulative update KB5008212 showed up. I was hoping it might override/fix the previous one that failed but that wasn't the case, still getting an error. Interestingly, it's a different error code: 0x800f0905. Anything I can do to help troubleshoot further, please let me know.

Thanks

Hi,

  • Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
  • Please copy this file to your desktop.
  • Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
  • Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To > Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
  • If the file is too large to upload here, upload the file to www.wetransfer.com and post the link in your next reply.

Hi,

I have some bad news, there's an entire sub-key missing in this file.
The best way to resolve this problem is to make a back-up and perform a repair install.

In-place upgrade (repair install)
This will reinstall and update the operating system and fix any corruptions.
  • Go to this Microsoft page and under the title Create Windows 10 installation media press on Download tool now.
  • Save the tool on your Desktop and double click to run it.
  • On the License terms page, if you accept the license terms, select Accept.
  • On the What do you want to do page, select Upgrade this PC now, and then select Next.
  • Follow the instructions and select Keep personal files and apps, when you are asked to.
  • It might take a couple of hours, depending on your internet speed connection, to install Windows 10. Your PC will restart a few times. Make sure you don’t turn off your PC.
  • After downloading and installing, the tool will walk you through how to set up Windows 10 on your PC.

Hi Maxstar,

Thanks again for looking into this. Was hoping it wouldn't come to that, but I followed the steps and the repair appears to be successful. Windows Update was able to apply updates and I was able to install Windows features via control panel that I previously couldn't. All my files and programs remained intact, so I think this worked great in the end.

Cheers,
Billy
