The system proposes updates, attempts to install them, but it fails.
- Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1903 for x64-based Systems (KB4577671) give error 0x800f0831
- A full Windows 10 (2004) install (from ISO file) always gives 0xC1900101 - 0x40017. The installation failed in the SECOND_BOOT phase with an error during BOOT operation. At that moment all external hardware, including internet is disconnected.

I've disabled all non windows services to get a clean boot. I even disabled windows security defender and firewall. No luck.
I think some install files are corrupt, according to DISM healthcheck, but they are hidden and protected.

Hello Sarah1

Apologies for the delay. Are you still requiring assistance?

Hi

As it's been a few days can you try windows updates again and post the CBS log when it fails so there is fresh log.

Thanks

The CBS.zip is too large to upload now. I saved it on my One Drive but I need an e-mail address to share it with. What e-mail address should I use?

Hi.

you can use the option to send a link or paste onto a website.

see instructions here. Follow the instructions to copy a link to a text message or on a website.

leave the option allow editing unchecked.

  • Name this file ComponentBasedServicing (with no file extension) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Right-click on the saved file and choose Send To -> Compressed (zipped) Folder.
  • Attach the .ZIP file to your next post.

Hi

Please do the following.

Install Update with DISM

  1. Download this update and save to your desktop. The file name will be Windows10.0-KB4540673-x64_PSFX.cab.zip.
  2. Right-click on this file and select Extract All... Keep the defaults and click the Extract button. You can close the folder window that opens
  3. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  4. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator. Go ahead and allow if you receive the UAC prompt.
  5. Copy and paste the following command into the command prompt window and press enter.

    dism /online /add-package /packagepath:%userprofile%\desktop\Windows10.0-KB4540673-x64_PSFX.cab\Windows10.0-KB4540673-x64_PSFX.cab
  6. You should receive the message:
    The operation completed successfully.
Restart Windows to complete this operation. <---You may not get this line.
Do you want to restart the computer now (Y/N)? <---You may not get this line.
Let me know if this is successful.

Hi, I'm signed in and I've requested access several times, but still have no access.

Hi

You should not need to sign in. Clicking on the link in the post should take you to the page to download the file.

Can you try again, I've changed a setting.

Hi,
Download worked now. Extract was a problem due to too long path. So I relocated the zip file on C:\ in order to extract itself. Went fine eventually. I copied the extract to the desktop so no modifications were required to the command prompt instruction you prepared for me. This went fine and I received the message to restart the computer, as you predicted.
After restart the system attempted to install the update ... but unfortunately something went wrong and the update was reverted. Once again, I'm back to square one.
I start to think it's no longer worth all the hassle and leave the system stuck on this Windows version, knowing that some day it's useless as it fails to update.

Hi

We can try some other things to fix it.

Can you post the latest CBS log.

Hi

Apologies for the delay.

Please do the following.

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put </> tags around the log to break up the text.
