I'm at the stage where I'm almost ripping my hair out.

3 days in and no progress on this issue, I've tried everything I've read.
From SFC scans, SFCFix, DISM restore health, removing SystemDistribution + caroot32, to the Windows Troubleshooter.

I've attempted to upgrade via the Windows Update utility and the Media Creation Tool.
I've seen the occasional, SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION bluescreen; but despite troubleshooting, it doesn't seem to want to generate a DMP for me.

Every time it finishes downloading, it reboots, attempts to install and the white text 'Undoing changes to your computer' screen appears over a black background and I'm booted into an unchanged OS.
CBS is attached, I'd really love some support here for my sanity.

Please retry and after it fails attach setuperr.log (from various locations, if needed, I can scan your system for it) and C:\Windows\Inf\setupapi.dev.log.

Apologies for the delay, I've been away. All requested as attached. Please let me know if there's anything else you need :)

Update to this. I've installed the latest SSU (4487327) and the latest KB (KB4502112) with no luck.
The update still stops at around 20-30% and bluescreens with SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION on a restart, restarts a couple more times and undoes the changes.

There is no Minidump folder, as mentioned before I can't seem to get the BSODs to dump anything

Ah, okay. Let's do a precautionary check then:

GSmartControl
Follow the instructions below to check your SMART status with GSmartControl:

  • Download the portable version of GSmartControl and save it on your Desktop;
  • Extract the zip file to your Desktop. Open the folder gsmartcontrol-1.1.3-win64 which should be located on your Desktop and double-click gsmartcontrol.exe to launch the program.
  • Identify your drive in the list (if recognized by the tool), and hover your mouse over it.
  • You should see something called: SMART status. It will either read: Enabled, in which case you should do the following:
  • Double-click on it to bring up its window (usually you'll find your drive by its size or its brand name);
  • Go to the Self-Tests tab, then select Extended Self-test in the Test type drop-down list and click on Execute (this test can take a few hours to complete);
  • Once the test is over, the results will be displayed at the bottom of the window. Please copy and paste these results in your next reply or take a screenshot;
  • Also, go in the Attributes tab and if you have any entries highlighted in red or pink, take a screenshot of the GSmartControl window and attach it in your next reply;
  • Please note: If the SMART Status reads: Unsupported, stop and let me know.

Step#1 - FRST Scan

1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
2. Right-click FRST64.exe and click Run as Administrator to run it as administrator. When the tool opens, click Yes to disclaimer.
3. Please ensure you place a check mark in the Addition.txt check box at the bottom of the form before running (if not already checked).
4. Press Scan button.
5. It will produce a log called FRST.txt in the same directory the tool is run from (which should now be the desktop)
6. Please attach the log back here.
7. Another log (Addition.txt - also located in the same directory as FRST64.exe) will be generated Please also attach that along with the FRST.txt in your reply.

Done. Removed OpenVPN and the SoftEther client. Attempted the update again which had the same failure mode with a reboot at roughly 27% and BSOD with the SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION, I then reboot twice more to clear the BSOD and it undoes the changes.
