I am running Windows 8.1 on an ASUS X555L laptop. My original problem was that the Intel True Key program stopped working. When I tried to open True Key, the window opened but it just appeared to hang, with a continually spinning wheel. I tried reinstalling True Key but it still would not work, also by this time I noticed that my browser home page had been hijacked by 'Launchpage.org'. This applied to all three browsers on my system, viz. Firefox (my normally preferred browser), Google Chrome and Internet Explorer. So I decided to run System Restore to roll back to an earlier Restore Point when True Key was working and my browsers' start pages had not been hijacked. However, when System Restore finished, it displayed an error message saying that the process had failed to restore the system to the restore point, because one or more files were corrupt, etc.

I ran sfc \scannow in a Command Prompt window with Admin privileges. After sfc \scannow had completed the following message was displayed: "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. Note that logging is currently not supported in offline servicing scenarios."

Examination of the CBS log file revealed that two files were corrupt, although there appeared to be multiple incidents of each file. The two files were:

MSDTC.LOG
Amd64\CNBJ2530.DPB

I then ran SFCFix from Tech tool store and that appears to have fixed one of the corrupt files (Amd64\CNBJ2530.DPB) but not the other one (MSDTC.LOG). This does appear to have fixed my problem with True Key and I also seem to have been able to reset my browsers' home pages now. However, I still can't restore my system to any of the Restore Points using System Restore and I suspect that is because MSDTC.LOG is corrupt.

I have attached the SFCFix.txt file in accordance with Sysnative's Windows Update Forum Posting Instructions. Presumably the CBS.zip file is too large to attach to this post, since the instructions for attaching it did not work. So after I have posted this thread I will attempt to use the large file uploader to upload the CBS.zip file.

Re: Windows 8.1 System Restore Failure

Help! I cannot upload my CBS.zip file! I have tried to follow the instructions in "Re: Windows Update Forum Posting Instructions" as below:

What to do if your CBS logfiles are too large to upload

In some instances you will be unable to upload your CBS logfiles to our forum because they are too large. To work around this problem you need to use our large file uploader.

First, create a thread describing your problem and with a copy of SFCFix.txt. You may make a little note that the CBS logfiles are shortly to follow if you like. The order here is essential though - our uploader works best when you've already created your thread, so please make sure to make your thread before following these instructions.

Then, once your thread has been posted:

  1. Download SFCFix.exe using the following link and save the tool to your Desktop: Download SFCFix
  2. Download SFCFixScript.txt and save this to your Desktop as well: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...cript.txt?dl=1
  3. On your Desktop, you should now see two files: SFCFixScript.txt and SFCFix.exe.
  4. Drag the file SFCFixScript.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  5. SFCFix will now begin to upload your CBS logfiles to our server.

If all goes well, you should see that your logfiles have now been added to your thread.

Do not worry if you run these instructions before creating your thread though. We should still be able to access the files, they just won't be visible to you nor tacked onto the end of your thread - but we should still be able to find them.

Unfortunately, the links do not appear to work!

Re: Windows 8.1 System Restore Failure

Solving the browser hijacker problem is much easier than restoring the system.
Please follow these steps:

Open Control Panel and then click Uninstall a program under Programs option.
Remove potentially unwanted programs.

Delete everything in the Windows temp folder,
C > Windows > Temp

Delete all cookies,
Delete all temporary Internet files(not to be confused with windows temp files), these should be deleted via your internet browsers.
It will save you messing about in the the hidden system files.

See this article for more removal guide steps and information.

Hi Ralph,

Thanks for your response but, as I said in my original post, I seem to have managed to overcome the problem of my browsers' home pages being hijacked by Launchpage.org without any outside assistance. It's the 'System Restore' problem that I actually need help with but, unfortunately, the required help does not appear to be forthcoming in this forum!

Hi BrianDrab,
I am not sure that I am still having the same problems that I described in my original post but I have been experiencing problems with Windows Update. After implementing a batch of updates, Windows would not start properly and an error message was displayed saying something about the update having failed. After restarting in safe mode I was able to restart the system in normal mode but there was a problem with Windows Update when I tried to check for updates. I ran WindowsUpdate.diagcab a couple of times and it seemed to fix the update problem. However, when I ran "sfc /scannow" in Administrator Command Prompt mode, after "Verification 100% complete" the following message was displayed:
"Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. Note that logging is currently not supported in offline servicing scenarios". So I think that there must still be a problem with my system.

OK, no problem. Do the following again so I can get a fresh log.

SFC Scan
1. Right-click on the Start button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter
sfc /scannow

3. Once it finishes, copy and paste the following into the command-prompt window and press Enter.
copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"

4. Once this has completed please go to your Desktop and you will find CBS.txt => Right-click on this file and choose Send To...Compressed (zipped folder). Please upload this zipped file CBS.zip to this thread

Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.
