[SOLVED] [Win8.1] KB2919355 Update: failure to configure updates, reverting changes

Hi all,

This is my second PC where Windows 8.1 Update won't install (it won't install on 2 out of 3 of my PCs). I ran sfc /scannow beforehand and there were errors but SFC fix and DISM cleaned them up. I ran another SFC /scannow immediately before attempting the upgrade however it failed again for the same reason as previous attempts. It gets to almost the very end of the upgrade process and then displays the error "Failure to configure Windows updates, reverting changes'. Does anyone have any ideas as to what's stopping the update from installing? In event viewer, it shows error 0x800F0922.

I've attached my Windows Update log file. I've done another sfc /scannow and no errors are found. CBS.log attached.

DISM Scan

  1. Right click on the
    aa922834-ed43-40f1-8830-d5507badb56c_39.jpg
    button
  2. Click on Command prompt (Admin) => Press Yes on the prompt
  3. Inside the Command Prompt windows copy and paste the following command DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  4. Please wait for this to Finish before continuing with rest of the steps.

Once this has completed please upload the CBS folder again.

No reports for update corruptions inside that DISM scan.

This error which you are getting for Windows 8.1 (KB2919355) are you running the offline installer? Through the Windows store?

Also if you open up Windows Updates and search for new updates -> do any appear? It is important to install any updates currently inside Windows Updates before trying to install 8.1. Windows 8.1 has a few prerequisite updates that are required to be installed before updated to 8.1.

I'm trying to install via Windows Update via Settings in the Metro interface. It has the same options available in Windows Update in the Control Panel. Namely,
- Update for Microsoft Silverlight (KB2977218)
- Definition update for Windows Defender (KB2267602)
and Windows 8.1 Update for x64-based Systems (KB2919355)

These are the only updates available.

Thanks. I attached my Windows Update log to the first post though I'm not sure if that's helpful. I had a look through though to be honest, I don't really know what I'm looking for.

I am going to have to get one of the experts to take a look at the windows update log.

In the mean the time inside windows updates untick the option for 8.1 and try and install the ore two on there own.

Thanks - I unticked the Windows 8.1 update and ticked the other ones and they all updated successfully.

Do another search for more updates, do any more appear? if yes download them. Once there are no more downloads left to run try and get 8.1 again.

I've done that and there is only one update remaining, KB2919355. Thanks.

I ran it again with the same result, getting to above 90% and then failure to configure Windows Update, reverting changes. Log attached. Thanks.

Is that the right file the timestamps is 2013-10-18 16:30:12:211? Your first log had the timestamp 2014-07-24 07:14:14:779

Hi all, I just wanted to give this one a bump. Has anyone any ideas as to why my Windows 8.1 Update 1 is failing? I'm completely at a loss with this PC. I'm not getting any errors with an sfc /scannow

Sorry for the delay.

Software Distribution rename

  • Right click on the
    aa922834-ed43-40f1-8830-d5507badb56c_39.jpg
    button -> Click on Command prompt (Admin) => Press Yes on the prompt
  • Enter in the following commands:
    net stop wuauserv
    ren %SystemRoot%\SoftwareDistribution\Download DL.bak
    ren %SystemRoot%\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore DS.bak
    net start wuauserv

Once completed please try and run windows update again.

Unfortunately, it didn't work. It failed exactly the same way, almost got to the end after the system had restarted a few times and then failure to configure Windows update, reverting changes.

Any ideas? I've attached my latest Windows Update log.

I ran another sfc /scannow and no errors were found. I also ran the Windows Update Troubleshooter and it fixed a few errors. I attempted the update again though still no joy. Windows Update log attached.

Can you boot into the recovery environment, and launch command prompt please: How to use the Windows 7 System Recovery Environment Command Prompt

When command prompt is launched, type in the following command and press enter:

DISM /image:C:\ /cleanup-image /revertpendingactions
