Now having the same issue with the October security rollup for Windws 7 x64-based Systems (KB4041681)

Hello and welcome

Due to the precise nature of your corruption, you will receive help from a user named SleepyDude. He's one of our senior trainees here who's in his final phase of his studies and needs to gain some real world experience in specific areas of Windows Update. This means that he'll be assisting you, but that I will first need to double check and approve his fixes before he posts them to you. If anything this is a good thing for you because it means that you've got at least two of us watching over your thread, but it will unfortunately add a slight delay between each reply. I hope that you understand and can accept the need for us to train up new members in this way in order to carry on doing what we do here, however, if for any reason you object to this setup, I will happily take on your thread myself.

Thank you very much for your understanding. We'll be with you very shortly.

Hi lsonste715 nice to meet you.

Before we can start trying to fix the problem we need to check the Windows Registry please execute the following steps:

  • download the script ExportCBSRegistry.cmd and save it to the Desktop
  • right-click the file ExportCBSRegistry.cmd and select Run as administrator
  • when the script ends a new file called SoftwareCBS.hiv will be located on the Desktop
  • right-click the file SoftwareCBS.hiv on the Desktop and select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder
  • If zip file is too large to upload to the forum please share the file using a service like Dropbox, Google Drive, etc. or upload to SendSpace and just provide the link for the file here

Hi,

Sorry for the long delay, there registry part that Windows uses to store information about the installed Updates, etc. is badly damaged and we are discussing the best course of action to reconstruct that part...

We need to see another log, please execute the following:

Download MiniToolBox and save the file to the Desktop.
Run the tool and check the following options:
  • List Restore Points
Click on Go.

Post the resulting log in your next reply.

Hi,

We need to collect yet more data from your computer. Please execute the following steps:

Step 1 - Retrieve the Components Hive
  1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file
  2. Please copy the COMPONENTS file to your desktop
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again
  3. Right-click on this file on your Desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your Desktop
  4. If file will is too large to upload to the forum please share the file using a service like Dropbox, Google Drive, etc. or upload to www.sendspace.com and just provide the link for the file here

Step 2 - Export Registry keys
  • download the script ExportSbSRegistry.cmd and save it to the Desktop
  • right-click the file ExportCBSRegistry.cmd and select Run as administrator
  • when the script ends a new file called SoftwareCBS.zip will be located on the Desktop
  • If zip file is too large to upload to the forum please share the file using a service like Dropbox, Google Drive, etc. or upload to SendSpace and just provide the link for the file here

Hi Isonste715,

Due to my inexperience on fixing those registry problems and the complexity of them, preparing a fix for you did take a long time, sorry about that.

Lets start doing some fixing...

Step 1 - Backup the Registry
  • Please download RegBak (by AceLogix Software) and save it to the Desktop
  • Right-click on the file regbak.zip then select Extract all... to extract the files to the Desktop a new folder called regback will be created
  • open the folder regbak and Run regbak64 by double clicking the file, if it doesn't work because you have a 32-bit Windows, Run regbak instead
  • don't change any options and click Next, accept the default Settings and click Start. RegBak will backup all of your Windows Registry hives.

Step 2 - SFCFix Script

!!! WARNING !!! The following fix is only relevant for this system and no other, applying this fix on another computer will not work and most likely will cause problems...

  • Download SFCFix.exe (by Niemiro) and save it to the Desktop
  • Download the file SFCScript.txt, attached below, and save this to your Desktop
  • On your Desktop, make sure you have the two files:
    myjIXnC.png
    SFCFix.exe and
    8RAhYFg.gif
    SFCScript.txt
  • Drag the file SFCScript.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it
  • The SFCFix tool will process the script
  • Upon completion, a log file SFCFix.txt should be created on your Desktop
  • Open the SFCFix.txt log and copy & paste the contents to your post

So that's very good, but I installed both the 2017-10 and 2017-09 Security and Quality Rollup for .NET (KB4043766 and KB4041083) and they show up as needed again after everytime I do a scan. The good news is that any of the other patches/rollups that I installed look like they are good.

Thanks,

Luke

Hi Luke,

Before doing more things we need to check if windows complains with more errors...

System Update Readiness Tool (SUR)
  • Download the System Update Readiness Tool (x64) and save it to some place, its a big download and eventually we need to run it several times, please keep the file
  • Run the tool. Its like an Update but it can take a long time to do the work. You will get an Installation Complete screen when it's done running
  • Please attach to your post the log from the following location: C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log
    Note:
If the file is too big please Zip it and upload the ZIP file to a service like Dropbox, Google Drive, etc. or upload to SendSpace and just provide the link for the file here

Hi Luke,

Lets take care of that error...

Step 1 - SFCFix Script

!!! WARNING !!! The following fix is only relevant for this system and no other, applying this fix on another computer will not work and most likely will cause problems...

Step 2 - System Update Readiness Tool (SUR)
  • Run again the SURT tool like you did before and wait for the message Installation Complete
  • Please attach to your post the new log from the following location: C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log
    Note:
If the file is too big please Zip it and upload the ZIP file to a service like Dropbox, Google Drive, etc. or upload to SendSpace and just provide the link for the file here
