[Win7SP1 x86] kb4038777 Fails to Install

Recently ran Windows update. 1 Important update (kb4038777) seemed to download and install ok, then prompted to restart computer. Windows configuration seemed to stall at 30% and eventually received a "Failure Configuring Windows Updates" message. Error code 8007054F.

Parts of the Windows registry are damaged.
Follow the instructions below.

Export registry as hive


  • Click on the Start button and in the search box, type regedit
  • When you see regedit on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator.
  • When regedit opens, using the left pane, navigate to the following registry key and select it by clicking on it once.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing

  • Once selected, click File > Export....
  • Change the Save as type: to Registry Hive Files (*.*).
  • Name this file ComponentBasedServicing (with no file extension) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Right-click on the SideBySide file and choose Send To -> Compressed (zipped) Folder.
  • Attach the .ZIP file to your next post.

  • Download

    SFCFix and move the executable to your desktop.
  • Download the attachment SFCFixScript.txt and save it on your desktop.
  • Save any work you have open, and close all programs.
  • Drag the SFCFixScript.txt file over the SFCFix.exe executable and release it.

  • Once done, a file will appear on your desktop, called SFCFix.txt.

Follow the instructions below to run a scan with the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) and provide a log.

  1. Download SURT for your system. (Windows 7 SP1 x86)
  2. Once downloaded, execute the installer, and go through the installation (this process can take around 15-20 minutes).
  3. On completion, a log will be created in C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log.
  4. Attach this log in your next reply.

Alternatively, if these instructions are unclear for you, you can follow the tutorial below.

System Update Readiness Tool (SURT)
 
Step 1:
Warning: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Do not run this script on another machine.

1. Download the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop:

2. Download the attachment fixlist.txt and save it to your desktop.
3. Right-click on FRST.exe and select "Run as administrator".
4. Press the Fix button.
5. The tool will now process fixlist.txt.
6. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
7. When finished, a log called Fixlog.txt will appear in the same directory the tool is run from.
8. Post the logfile Fixlog.txt as attachment in your next reply.

Step 2:
Start the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) again.
On completion, attach the logfile C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log in your next reply.

The FRST didn't work. Please do following.

Step 1:
Click on Start - All Programs - Accessories.
Right-click on Command-prompt and select Run as administrator.
When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following command into it, press enter afterwards.

Code:
chkdsk c: /r
At the question "Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)", press Y.
Restart the system.

Do not press any key during the restart. This will allow CHKDSK to start.
Wait for this to complete. Please note that this may take several hours. Let it run even if it looks like the process has stopped!
On completion, the system will restart automatically.

Step 2:

Attachments

There are some registry permissions that need to be fixed.

Step 1:
Disable Automatic Updates:
Click Start > Control Panel > Security > Windows Update > Change Settings.
Select "Never check for updates" in the list.

Stop "Windows Update" service:
Open Windows Task Manager. Open the tab "Services".
Right-click on the service-name "wuauserv" and select "Stop service".


Step 2:
Retrieve Software Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the SOFTWARE file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, try Option#2 below.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named SOFTWARE.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to SendSpace and just provide the link here.


Option#2 (only if you are unable to follow the previous instructions)


  • Please download the Freeware RegBak from here: Acelogix Software - Download products
    You will find it at the bottom of the page that the link brings you to.
  • Go ahead and install this program and accept all the defaults. After the last install screen the program should open.
  • Click the New Backup button. Accept the defaults and simply click Start.
  • When it says Finished successfully, click the Close button.
  • This will bring you back to the main screen of the program. You will see one entry in this list with the date that you did it. Right-click on this line-item and select Explore Backup...
  • This will bring you into the folder where the backup was made. You should see a Users folder and a Windows folder along with a couple other files. Double-click on the Windows folder to open it. Then open the System32 folder and then config folder. You should see around 6 files in here, one of which is named SOFTWARE.
  • Copy the SOFTWARE file to your Desktop. If the SOFTWARE file does not exist, please fetch it instead from C:\Windows\System32\config\SOFTWARE.
  • Now right-click on the SOFTWARE file that is on your desktop and select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
  • Then please upload the zip file (SOFTWARE.zip) to your favourite file sharing website (it will be too big to upload here). Examples of services to upload to are Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and then just provide the link in your reply.
  • You can close any open windows you have as well as the RegBak program now.
 
Please do following:
(This will not fix all the issues. We will see were we are now.)

Step 1:
Replace SOFTWARE Hive

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good.


  1. Download SOFTWARE.ZIP and save it to your desktop.
  2. Right-click on it and select Extract all.... Make sure the "Show extracted files when complete" is checked and click Extract.
  3. Now we have the SOFTWARE file that we will be using to replace your current one.
  4. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\config
  5. Right-click on the current SOFTWARE file and select rename. Rename it to SOFTWARE.bad.
    Note: If you get an error that the file is in use, reboot your computer and then try again.
  6. Take the file from the SOFTWARE folder on your desktop and paste it into C:\Windows\System32\config



Step 2:
Start the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) again.
On completion, attach the logfile C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log in your next reply.
 
I cannot figure out how to rename C:/Windows/System32/config/SOFTWARE

I keep getting the "The action cannot be completed because the file is open in System". I've tried re-booting in Normal and Safe Mode, but keep getting the same result.

What else can I try?
 
Follow the instructions below to create a backup of the SOFTWARE hive and replace it with the one I attached earlier.

  1. Please download the Freeware RegBak from here: Acelogix Software - Download products
    You will find it at the bottom of the page that the link brings you to.
  2. Go ahead and install this program and accept all the defaults. After the last install screen the program should open.
  3. Click the New Backup button. Accept the defaults and simply click Start.
  4. When it says Finished successfully, click the Close button.
  5. This will bring you back to the main screen of the program. You will see one entry in this list with the date that you did it.


SOFTWARE Hive Replacement with RegBak
Warning:This fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good.

  1. Close all open programs and save all your work. You will need to reboot the machine during this process.
  2. Right-click on SOFTWARE.ZIP I attached earlier and select Extract All.... Ensure the "Show extracted files when complete" checkbox is checked and click the Extract button.
  3. The software hive will be extracted. You will see the file named SOFTWARE (no extension)
  4. Copy the SOFTWARE hive to where you previously saved a backup. It should be (C:\Windows\RegBak\PC-NAME\DATE\Windows\System32\Config)
  5. 2014-10-1818_56_49-config_zpscbb8aad0.png
  6. Overwrite the one that is currently there when prompted.
  7. Open RegBak by click Start and selecting Registry Backup and Restore. Highlight the backup in the list (it should be the one you extracted at step #2), and press Restore. Click Start. RegBak will reboot your computer to complete the restore process.

Let me know if the hive was replaced or if there were any errors.
