Trying to install "2017-08 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB4034664)" I'm still getting error 80073701 after multiple attempts.

Some updates have installed OK but optional update "Internet Explorer 11 for Windows 7 Sp1 for x64-based Systems" also fails (code 9c48).

This is on an Acer Veriton N4620G running Windows 7-pro 64-bit with 104GB free on the system partition (C:).

I have tried clearing the update cache, Disk Check finds no problems and also "scf /scannow". Running the Windows Update Diagnostic claims to fix some errors but says 80073701 "Not Fixed". Installing "System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB947821)" succeeds but the fault remains.

I have also tried downloading KB4034664 and installing it manually. This also fails.

I have run SFCFix and its output follows. Unfortunately I had a problem attaching my CBS.zip file which is just over 11Mb. Following the instructions, I click the paperclip and the "File Upload Manager" window appears. I click "Add Files" and select my CBS.zip files then click "Upload". A rotating icon spins next to the help icon for about 2 minutes and then stops but no file appears in the uploaded files list. The compressed file is just over 11Mb so 2 minutes is about right for transferring it given my upload speed. Clicking done just gets me a message asking me to drag my uploaded file to the lower pane and I cannot do this if there is no file in the list. After some experimenting I have got it to work by splitting the CBS.log file (nearly 200Mb) into 2 and uploading 2 (5.5Mb) zip files. The first half of CBS.log and the other contents of the CBS folder are in the attached "CBS 1 of 2.zip" and the second part of CBS.log is in "CBS 2 of 2.zip".

Thank you in advance for any help you can give me.

Sorry. Forgot to say I have also scanned for malware with Malwarebytes and AVG.

When IE isn't kept up to date all sorts of issues can occur and some of them aren't fixable without a repair install. Please start with the following. Attempt to download and install the Security Only update instead and let me know if it works.

Microsoft Update Catalog

OK. That worked without any problems. I'm sitting on my hands awaiting your response so as not to do anything that might disrupt your plan of action:thumbsup2:

Re: Error 80073701: 2017-08 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Win 7 for x64 (KB4034

That's what I suspected. The Security Only update doesn't include an IE Update that the Monthly update has. That's why the Monthly full update doesn't work.

So at least your computer is protected from a security standpoint. Please check for Windows Updates and let me know which Important KB numbers show up.

Re: Error 80073701: 2017-08 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Win 7 for x64 (KB4034

I made it recheck, but the same updates are showing as previously. Just KB4034664 under important and KB4034670, KB4035036 and "Internet Explorer 11 for Windows 7 x64-based systems" (no KB number) under optional.

Re: Error 80073701: 2017-08 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Win 7 for x64 (KB4034

Yup. You won't be able to install the full cumulative update (you have the security only however) until IE11 gets install. We can try some things but before we do, do you have the Windows 7 x64 media (i.e. CD/DVD) where we could do a repair install? A repair install will keep all of your data and programs intact but has the benefit of fixing the OS. Please let me know.

Re: Error 80073701: 2017-08 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Win 7 for x64 (KB4034

I have a Win7_Pro_SP1_English_x64 DVD created from an image downloaded using the Windows ISO Downloader tool from Windows 7 Direct Download Links.

The Acer software with the machine also has an "eRecovery" utility which claims to be able to restore the system to the factory state (presumably a clean install) or to recover the system using the system image in the recovery partition. The documentation for this is not very good and it is not clear that the latter is exactly the same as a repair install, i.e. it says "files from user accounts will be transferred to c:\backup", but nothing about applications.

If you think there are other things we might try before going for a repair install, I would be happy to go along with that.

OK, attempt to install IE11 and when it fails please provide me with the following two logs.
Code:
c:\windows\logs\cbs\cbs.log
c:\windows\ie11_main.log

Please do the following.

1. Click your Start button and then type cmd in the search box. Right-click on cmd that comes up in the search results and select Run as administrator.
2. A User Account Control dialog may come up asking for approval. If it does go ahead and allow.
3. A command prompt window will open. Copy/Paste the following into the command-prompt and hit enter.
wmic qfe list brief /format:texttablewsys > "%USERPROFILE%\desktop\hotfix.txt"

4. After the command runs there will be a file on your desktop named hotfix.txt.
5. Please zip/attach this file.

Re: Error 80073701: 2017-08 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Win 7 for x64 (KB4034

When I ran the command from an administrator command prompt, after a few seconds, the message "No Instance(s) Available" was displayed. The hotfix.txt file was created on the desktop but was empty.

Re: Error 80073701: 2017-08 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Win 7 for x64 (KB4034

Just in case this is relevant - despite the lack of output from the previous command, selecting "Installed Updates" in Windows Update lists all installed updates from the last security update you suggested right back to 2012 when the system was new. Not sure if there is a way of listing this into a file, which is presumably what you were trying to do.

Re: Error 80073701: 2017-08 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Win 7 for x64 (KB4034

Did you make sure you copy and pasted the command instead of typing it?

Re: Error 80073701: 2017-08 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Win 7 for x64 (KB4034

Yes, and made sure I was running the command prompt as administrator.

Please do the following.

FRST Fix
NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system
1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
2. Download attached file and save it to the Desktop.
Note. It's important that both files, FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work (in this case...the desktop).
3. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
4. Press the Fix button just once and wait. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
5. When finished FRST64 will generate a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please post the contents of it in your reply.

Re: Error 80073701: 2017-08 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Win 7 for x64 (KB4034

No trouble. Let's approach this differently. Please do the following.

Step#1 - SFCFix Script
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop. If you still have this on your desktop from downloading previously, you don't need to re-download.
  2. Download SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please
