Hi:

I'm running Windows 7 SP1 64bit. Windows update stopped working because I think an update tried completing and the computer ran out of physical memory. I receive and update error code of 8000FFFF and it won't complete.

I've done the following:
1) I've run Windows update Diagnostic came back with "Problems installing recent updates" as "Not Fixed". There were no more details provided.
2) I also ran Window Update Agent but the Install failed with an error of 0x8000ffff.
3) I also ran Windows Update Standalone Installer. It asks, "Do you want to install the following Windows software update? Hotfix for Windows (KB947821)?" I say "Yes". It looks like it resets my Windows Update most recent download info, but it fails again when I try to run Windows Update.

I'm really hoping we can get this fixed. It's been a while since I've been able to successfully run an update.

Thanks.
Fred

Re: Windows 7 update won't update: Error 8000FFFF

Hi Guys: Can someone help with this? I'd really like to get it resolved. I'll definitely make a nice donation to the cause. Thanks. Fred

Please start with the following.

FRST Fix
NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system
1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
2. Download attached file and save it to the Desktop.
Note. It's important that both files, FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work (in this case...the desktop).
3. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
4. Press the Fix button just once and wait. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
5. When finished FRST64 will generate a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please post the contents of it in your reply.

Hi:

Sorry for the late response. I was out of town. Window update made more progress but still failed with the same error message in the end. Attached are the updated files. Thank you for the help!

Please try the following. If you don't have your Windows 7 DVD, please let me know.

Revert Pending Changes
1. Boot into the Windows RE mode: How to use the Windows 7 System Recovery Environment Command Prompt
2. Once the command Window is displayed please follow the below steps.
3. Type notepad into the command prompt and hit enter.
4. Click the File menu in notepad and choose Open. Click on Computer on the left hand side so that you see all the drive letters. You sill see Boot (X:) and likely others. Look for the drive letter that is associated to Local Disk.
5. Once you've identified the driver letter you may cancel out of this screen and close notepad.
6. Now type the following into the Command Prompt replacing C (shown in red) with the drive letter you identified in bullet#4. Note, there is a space after C:\ as well as before the last forward slash.
DISM /Image:C:\ /Cleanup-Image /RevertPendingActions

7. If all goes well you will see the following as the last few lines. Please let me know if you don't.
Code:
Reverting pending actions from the image...
The operation completed. Any revert of pending actions will be attempted after reboot.
The operation completed successfully.

Hi BrianDrab,

I was able to successfully revert the changes based on your last post. That worked great, however, I'm still getting the error "Code 8000FFFF.

Please see updated files attached.

Thank you!!!!!

Can you check if you have a restore point that goes back far enough before the error happened?

If you don't know how to do this, following is one way...

1. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Powershell
2. When you see Windows Powershell on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
3. When prompt opens, copy and paste the following command into it, press enter

Get-ComputerRestorePoint

4. What's the earliest date listed for a restore point?

Hi BrianDrab:

Thanks for such a quick response. Restore points attached.

Thanks.

Unfortunately, the original problem happened several months ago. A workable restore point is long gone. Are there any other options?

Yes. I have the "Reinstallation DVD: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit" that originally shipped with the laptop. It's the same CD I used for the Windows 7 System Recovery Environment Command Prompt.

I think you are correct. The DVD makes no mention of SP1. I checked the original invoice and it makes no reference of SP1 either. I think that is correct. I bought this laptop a very long time ago.

Please try the following.

Step#1 - Capture Process Monitor Trace
1. Download and run Process Monitor. Leave this running while you perform the next steps.
2. Cause the Error Code 8000FFFF.
3. Stop Process Monitor as soon as the error comes up. You can simply do this by clicking the magnifying glass on the toolbar as shown below.

4. Select the File menu...Save... and save the file to your desktop. This is likely the default location. The name (unless changed) will be LogFile.PML. This is fine.
5. Zip up and attach the LogFile.PML file as well as your CBS.log.

I have the file but it's 20MB zipped. How should I get this to you? The max size for upload is 7.15MB.
