Hi Sysnative team,

I'm having problems relating to the windows 7 update service.

The issues have existed for quite a few months now, and the update service has been switched off because after many hours I gave up trying to fix it.

The problems are:

Windows update hangs forever.
Windows updates list is empty except for Microsoft office updates.
Attempting to apply a windows update manually always give an 'this update is not applicable for your computer' message (except for the windows update readiness tool).
Windows features box through control panel is empty.

I've read the forum posting rules and attached the sfcFix and cbs log files. I also ran a fresh, System update readiness tool scan and the Checksur.log is included with the cbs logs.

note: I ran the sfcfix after I ran the system update readiness tool.

SFCFix version 3.0.0.0 by niemiro.
Start time: 2017-03-30 14:43:20.004
Microsoft Windows 7 Service Pack 1 - amd64
Not using a script file.

SFCFix version 3.0.0.0 by niemiro has encountered an unhandled exception.
Currently storing 3332 datablocks.
Finish time: 2017-03-30 18:02:05.041

Thanks :)

Re: Windows update hanging. Installed updates empty. Windows features box empty

Hi again,

After running the sfcfix, although it returned an error before it finished I decided to run the SUR tool again and I noticed there where far fewer errors so heres the updated results.

Any help?

Hi and welcome to Sysnative. Sorry for the delay. Let's keep the Windows Update service enabled while we work on your issue. Once enabled and started, please do the following.

FRST Fix
NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system
1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
2. Download attached file and save it to the Desktop.
Note. It's important that both files, FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work (in this case...the desktop).
3. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
4. Press the Fix button just once and wait. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
5. When finished FRST64 will generate a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please post the contents of it in your reply.

I clicked it and after a few seconds I got an "this update is not applicable to this computer" popup message.

Ran the update on startup but got the same "this update is not applicable to this computer" message.

Thanks. Please do the following.

Step#1 - Run Windows Repairs
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.
1. Download Windows Repair (All-in-One) Portable to your desktop.
2. Once the file is downloaded, right-click on the file on your desktop and choose Extract All...

3. Keep the defaults and click the Extract button.

6. Double-click on Repair_Windows.exe to open. Note: Please make sure all of your programs are closed and anything you were working on is saved as we will be rebooting.
7. When the program opens, click the Reboot to Safe Mode button at the bottom of the screen. Answer Yes to allow.
8. Once rebooted into Safe Mode, open the program again. When the program opens, click the Repairs tab and click the Open Repairs button.
9. A backup of your registry will be made. After a few moments you will have many options from which you can choose.
10. Please click the Unselect All button and then click to enable only the following ones:

04 - Register System Files
05 - Repair WMI
06 - Repair Windows Firewall
10 - Remove Policies Set By Infection
14 - Remove Temp Files
15 - Repair Proxy Settings
17 - Repair Windows Updates
21 - Repair MSI (Windows Installer)

11. Ensure the Restart check box is selected and click the Start Repairs button in the lower right of the screen. This may take some time to run so be patient.

12. Once the fixes are complete you will be prompted to restart your machine. Answer Yes.

I followed the tutorial and rebooted, but windows installed updates are still not showing (except office updates) and the features box is still empty.

Thanks

I know you did this previously but I would like a fresh log.

Step#1 - System Update Readiness Tool (SUR)
1. Download and run the following file.
2. When it asks you if you wish to install, please answer yes. Note: It could take 15 minutes or more to run. Please don't cancel.
3. You will get an Installation Complete screen when it's done running.
4. Please attach the log from the following location. C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log
Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

Please do the following.

How long does FRST64 usually run for?? So far it's been running for 2 hours 40 minutes and I'm starting to think its hung up.
When I look at the log its created I notice the last line was: Checking Component Watchlist => Error: No automatic fix found for this entry.
Checking the log again 10 mins later the above line is still the latest entry.

I've attached the log. Please let me know if I can stop FRST64.

Thanks
