Hello,

I am in need of help. I was attempting to install SP1 and received an error 80073712. Apparently, Avast has corrupted some registry entries and I have no idea how to fix the situation. I have included the SFCfix Results & CBS File.

Hello Brian, Thanks for the reply. I still need your assistance with the issue I am having. Thank you very much for the help.

Hello and welcome

Due to the precise nature of your corruption, you will receive help from a user named softwaremaniac. He's one of our senior trainees here who's in his final phase of his studies and needs to gain some real world experience in specific areas of Windows Update. This means that he'll be assisting you, but that I will first need to double check and approve his fixes before he posts them to you. If anything this is a good thing for you because it means that you've got at least two of us watching over your thread, but it will unfortunately add a slight delay between each reply. I hope that you understand and can accept the need for us to train up new members in this way in order to carry on doing what we do here, however, if for any reason you object to this setup, I will happily take on your thread myself.

Thank you very much for your understanding. We'll be with you very shortly.

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Attach the file into your next post for me to analyze.

Thank you very much BrianDrab and softwaremaniac for your assistance. BrianDrab, I completely understand and accept the fact that you are training others. Thank you again.

SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

If no corruption is detected, please go ahead and try to install SP1 again.

Update failed again with same error code. Attached is the new cbs file. I compressed it as the file size is 147mb. Thanks.

When you check for updates, are there any updates (besides SP1) left to install? If so, try installing them and report back.

Do you know if all of your drivers are up to date? If you do not know how to check this, feel free to post back, and I'll assist you.

Finally got SP1 to install! Thanks immensely for your help softwaremaniac and BrianDrab!
