[SOLVED] [Win7SP1 x64] update error 80073712

Hello,

I've been unable to successfully update my Win 7, SP1 x64 machine. Most of the updates result in the 0x80073712 error. I've run the gamut of troubleshooters, renamed the software distribution and catroot2 folders and many other threads of advice from various websites. Hopefully this forum can assist.

Hi and welcome to Sysnative. Please start with the following.

Step#1 - System Update Readiness Tool (SUR)
1. Download and run the following file.
2. When it asks you if you wish to install, please answer yes. Note: It could take 15 minutes or more to run. Please don't cancel.
3. You will get an Installation Complete screen when it's done running.
4. Please attach the log from the following location. C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log
Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.
 
Reran Windows Update -> Showed 10 important updates.
Tried to install -> All failed each with error 80073712.

OK, try to install only one of those updates and let me know what the KB number is of the update. When it fails, please zip up and attach your c:\windows\logs\cbs\cbs.log

Tried to install "Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB3172605)" today at 2017-03-14 13:45:54.

Please do the following.

FRST Registry Search
1. Click your Start button and choose Control Panel.
2. In the upper right corner ensure the View by: is set to Category.
3. Select the Programs group.

4. Click the Turn Windows features on or off link. This will bring up the Windows Features dialog. Wait until this dialog populates with information.
Note: This loads your components hive which is what we want. Please keep this dialog open while you perform the remaining steps.
5. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
6. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
7. Copy and paste
dafc4385d7c..2ff1b170ffd_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7601.17647_74786482445ab071into the Search box and click the Search Registry button.

8. When the scan is complete a notepad window will open with the results. Please copy and paste the contents in your next reply. If for some reason notepad doesn't open the file should be

  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCScript.txt.
  5. Drag the file SFCScript.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please

Try to install "Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB3172605)" again and if it fails please provide me the CBS.log
 
Applying same update fails with same error. The zipped CBS.log file seems to be too large to attach ( 8mb ).
I note the following error at the end of the file.

One more thing to fix. Please do the following.

Disable Windows Update
1. Click your Start button and type cmd.exe into the search box.
2. Right-click on cmd that comes up in the search results and select Run as administrator. Click Continue if prompted with the User Account Control dialog.
3. Copy/Paste the following into the command-prompt window and hit enter. Note: You will have to right-click your mouse in the command-prompt window and select paste. You can't use the keyboard shortcuts.

4. Notepad should open with some information. Please copy and paste that information into your next reply.
