Hello,

Found the thread below and was very impressed with your support and I can't help but think I have a similar issue:
[Win7SP1 x64] "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation"

Problem: black screen for both regular and safe mode login. No recent hardware upgrades. No recent SW upgrades that I know of; wife was on last and she did not notice any updates taking place. I have multi-boot and have gotten into my Win10 install, so I know it isn't hardware and that I can pull out the files I need, but I also need back into win7 for some of my wifes work...

I've manually run chkdsk /R on the partition (d:) and it found 3 bad sectors and it repaired them; one was pagefile.sys, the other two were located in SysWOW64. Can't remember the exact files, didn't take notes as I thought I would be able to get from log file...

When I run SFC using the following syntax:
sfc /scannow /offbootdir=c:\ /offwindir=d:\windows

I get:
"Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation."

I've attached the CBS log. Can't run sfcfix.exe from cmd prompt.

Your help is most appreciated!

This is the command I found
The following command needs to be used to run the system file scan on another directory that is not the active system directory:
Code:
[B]sfc /scannow /offwindir=d:\windows /offbootdir=d:\[/B]
which differs from what you have.

Thanks plodr, just tried the above syntax and got the same result.

I also tried changing the offbootdir to all available drives and got the same result.

Wondering if the bad sectors in the sysWOW64 folder are to blame, so here is an idea that I'd like feedback on:
1. Rename the existing sysWOW64 folder to sysWOW64temp
2. Copy in the sysWOW64 folder from a good win7 install

assuming the above works to get me booted into windows then I could:
1. initiate a re-install on win7 to refresh the OS and save my programs/settings/accounts
2. before the re-boot use a USB repair tool to move the original sysWOW64 folder back

I'd appreciate any thoughts, caveats and issues this brings.

Thanks!

Bad sectors means the hard drive is failing. There is no "repair". The items in the bad sectors are relocated elsewhere on the hard drive.
What will happen is the number of bad sectors will increase.

Instead of wasting time reinstalling Windows 7, I'd buy another hard drive, install Windows 7 then create a partition for Windows 10 and install that.

Perhaps someone here who reads CBS logs can offer a more optimistic view of the situation.
