Hi,

I have a machine where 2 updates are persistently failing:

  • Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5.1 KB2937610
  • Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5.1 KB3097989

The error codes are 800B0100 & 80073712

I have tried running a couple of Microsoft Fixits, run the System Update Readiness Tool and have renamed the SoftwareDistribution folder, etc, but they are still failing

I have run the SFCFix but the resulting CBS is too large to attach, so I will upload that separately.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Many thanks

Hello and welcome

Due to the precise nature of your corruption, you will receive help from a user named CKing123. He's one of our senior trainees here who's in his final phrase of his studies and needs to gain some real world experience in specific areas of Windows Update. This means that he'll be assisting you, but that I will first need to double check and approve his fixes before he posts them to you. If anything this is a good thing for you because it means that you've got at least two of us watching over your thread, but it will unfortunately add a slight delay between each reply. I hope that you understand and can accept the need for us to train up new members in this way in order to carry on doing what we do here, however, if for any reason you object to this setup, I will happily take on your thread myself.

Thank you very much for your understanding. We'll be with you very shortly.

Re: Security Updates for .NET Framework 3.5.1 Failing Windows 7

Hello dburns and :welcome: to Sysnative!

Lets collect some information:

  1. Go to this page and download the Fix-It for Enable Windows Installer logging
  2. Re-run Windows Update. Try to install these updates.
  3. If they fail, then download this update and this update and install them manually.
  4. Go to this page again and download the Fix-It for Disable Windows Installer logging
  5. Download collect.exe from here.
  6. This program creates a log file in %TEMP%\vslogs.cab Upload and attach this to your next reply.
  7. Copy the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder and zip up the folder. Attach it in your next reply. If the .zip file is too big to upload, upload it to Google Drive, or OneDrive and give us the link.

Thanks

Hi CKing,

Thanks for coming back to me. I carried out all the steps you advised, but the updates still failed. I have uploaded the log files to Google Drive and you should be able to access them here - https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B0X0Bnu1Xh6pT3MtVEtjbjl5a1E&usp=sharing

I look forward to hearing from you in due course.

Many thanks

Re: Security Updates for .NET Framework 3.5.1 Failing Windows 7

Hello dburns!

Follow these instructions:
SFCFix Fix
This fix is very specific for dburns's computer. For everyone else, trying this fix on your own computer might damage your computer. If you are after assistance, create a new thread, and you will be assisted shortly.

Download SFCFix (by niemiro) and move the executable on your Desktop
Download the attached View attachment SFCFix.zip and move the archive to your Desktop
Note: Make sure that the file is named SFCFix.zip, do not rename it.
Save any work you have open, and close every programs
Drag the SFCFix.zip archive file over the SFCFix.exe executable and release it
mMabJGT.gif
SFCFix will launch, let it complete
Once done, a file will appear on your Desktop, called SFCFix.txt
Open the file, then copy and paste its content in your next reply

Hi,

I just re-ran the fix and I'm now getting an Access Denied error:

SFCFix version 2.4.5.0 by niemiro.
Start time: 2015-12-10 08:35:53.945
Microsoft Windows 7 Service Pack 1 - amd64

Failed to process all directives successfully.
SFCFix version 2.4.5.0 by niemiro has completed.
Currently storing 1 datablocks.

I tried altering permissions on the Manifests folder but the script resets them when it runs. Is there a way around this?

Thanks

Re: Security Updates for .NET Framework 3.5.1 Failing Windows 7

Hello dburns. The path variables in the script were wrong so SFCFix gave the error. I fixed that so this script should work:

SFCFix Fix
This fix is very specific for dburns's computer. For everyone else, trying this fix on your own computer might damage your computer. If you are after assistance, create a new thread, and you will be assisted shortly.

Download SFCFix (by niemiro) and move the executable on your Desktop

mMabJGT.gif
SFCFix will launch, let it complete
Once done, a file will appear on your Desktop, called SFCFix.txt
Open the file, then copy and paste its content in your next reply

Now we will run a SFC Scan:

SFC Scan
1. Right-click on the Start
w8start.png
button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter
Code:
[COLOR=#0000ff]sfc /scannow[/COLOR]
3. Once it finishes, copy and paste the following into the command-prompt window and press Enter.
Code:
[COLOR=#0000ff]copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"[/COLOR]
4. Once this has completed please go to your Desktop and you will find CBS.txt => Right-click on this file and choose Send To...Compressed (zipped folder). Please upload this zipped file CBS.zip to this thread
Please Note
:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

Re: Security Updates for .NET Framework 3.5.1 Failing Windows 7

Hello dburns! SFC did not report any more corruptions, so we will take a look at the DISM log:

DISM Scan
1. Right-click on the Start
w8start.png
button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter
Code:
[COLOR=#0000ff]dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth[/COLOR]
3. Once it finishes, copy and paste the following into the command-prompt window and press Enter.
Code:
[COLOR=#0000ff]copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"[/COLOR]

Hi CKing,

The DISM command threw up this error:

C:\Windows\system32>dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool
Version: 6.1.7600.16385
Image Version: 6.1.7600.16385

Error: 87
The restorehealth option is not recognized in this context.
For more information, refer to the help.
The DISM log file can be found at C:\Windows\Logs\DISM\dism.log

Isn't that because it's not supported in Windows 7? I found this online - ".../CheckHealth, /ScanHealth, /RestoreHealth, /Source, and /LimitAccess can’t be used when servicing a version of Windows that is earlier than Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012 images"

I have attached the DISM log for you anyway.

Many thanks

Re: Security Updates for .NET Framework 3.5.1 Failing Windows 7

Alright. DISM /restorehealth is not available for Windows 7

Step#1 - System Update Readiness Tool (SUR)
1. Download and run the following file.
2. When it asks you if you wish to install, please answer yes. Note: It could take 15 minutes or more to run. Please don't cancel.
3. You will get an Installation Complete screen when it's done running.
4. Please attach the log from the following location. C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log
Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

UPDATE:
Hi CKing,
Your last fix has done the trick! - the machine has now installed the failed update and is reporting in WSUS as up-to-date finally!
