[Win7SP1 x64] Security Updates Failing 80073701

Hello and TIA for Your Help!

30 years IT, but cannot solve my partners Lenovo Notebook issue running Windows Updates on Windows 7 64 bit.

Security updates are failing due to missing files.

Have tried every fix - WU troubleshooter, SUR, etc. which brought me to your forum.

CBS.zip attached.

Not able to attach CBS.zip - too large I'm assuming. Directions to script the larger files takes me to a 404.

Due to the precise nature of your corruption, you will receive help from a user named softwaremaniac. He's one of our senior trainees here who's in his final phrase of his studies and needs to gain some real world experience in specific areas of Windows Update. This means that he'll be assisting you, but that I will first need to double check and approve his fixes before he posts them to you. Hello and welcome to Sysnative!

Step#1 - Fix Corrupt Files
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.


  1. Please download the file Packs.zip from the link and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Right-click on the file and select Extract All...
  3. Tick the box labelled Show extracted files when complete then click Extract
  4. A window will open showing two folders, Manifests and Packages
  5. Open the Manifests folder and copy the files into the following folder (if there are any files). If the Manifests folder doesn't exist within Winsxs you will need to create it.
    C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Winsxs\Manifests
  6. Open the Packages folder and copy the files into the following folder (if there are any files). If the Packages folder doesn't exist within Servicing you will need to create it.
    C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Servicing\Packages
  7. Run the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) again.
  8. When the SURT finishes installing, copy (Ctrl + C) and paste (Ctrl + V) the contents of the entire SURT log into your next post please. If it's too large to paste into your post, please zip up the file and attach.

    C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.persist.log

Could not check for updates with error 80244019.

Ran Windows Update Troubleshooter which fixed a couple problems then tried again.

Checked for updates successfully and found 2 updates to run.

Tried to run and failed with error 80246007, then failed again with error 80073701.

SFC Scan


  1. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

    Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

Attempt to install only one of the updates. When it fails, please attach the latest CBS.log you have. Please provide me with the KB number of the update you have tried to install.

Tried installing two updates individually from both Windows Updates and from Standalone. They were:
windows6.1-kb2952664-v23-x64_a7f762a22bf3f7f659dc78d63e9dc8f3529a286d.msu
and
windows6.1-kb4034664-x64_e4daa48a7407d5921d004dd550d62d91bf25839e.msu

Both generate error code 80073701.

Have run through all the workarounds, Windows Update Troubleshooter, SURT, etc.
