Will not install KB4038777. These monthly rollups are not installing at all.

Windows 7 Pro, x64

Just cloned Windows to a new machine because of a motherboard hardware issue, but the problem was identical before cloning.

I followed the forum's instructions (I think) pretty well, including running SFC, SURT, etc.

Here's my CBS link:

And thanks in advance for your help! Have been working with Win 7 for years, hundreds of installs, but this has me stumped. Happy to contribute.

Re: Security Monthly Quality Rollups not installing

Hello and welcome

Due to the precise nature of your corruption, you will receive help from a user named softwaremaniac. He's one of our senior trainees here who's in his final phase of his studies and needs to gain some real world experience in specific areas of Windows Update. This means that he'll be assisting you, but that I will first need to double check and approve his fixes before he posts them to you. If anything this is a good thing for you because it means that you've got at least two of us watching over your thread, but it will unfortunately add a slight delay between each reply. I hope that you understand and can accept the need for us to train up new members in this way in order to carry on doing what we do here, however, if for any reason you object to this setup, I will happily take on your thread myself.

Thank you very much for your understanding. We'll be with you very shortly.

Hello softwaremaniac: The link should be good now. It accidentally got deleted from the cloud service, but has been restored. Thanks!

Thanks for your reply.

I will run that .bat, but FYI, I had already renamed the SoftwareDistribution folder and re-run Windows Update, some time ago. No change in status. But perhaps renaming the .log file in addition to this will help.

Also FYI, we have had the exact same Windows Update issue with this computer for many months (only with the Monthly Quality Rollups), both before and after replacing the computer, using Easeus Todo backup to clone the drive as a "system transfer," reloading the drivers and removing any programs not relevant to the new computer.

Sorry to say, this did not work. We are in exactly the same place as before. Any further suggestions are most welcome. -PJ

After some more digging around online, it was suggested that I install Belarc Advisor, which I did. This program locates "missing" Microsoft (and other) software updates. It found many missing monthly security updates, going back to last December, along with MS links to the direct downloads. They all installed fine, up to and including the September 2017 security update. However, the September Monthly Rollup installs still says they have failed (one recommended and one optional). I am thinking that this is at this point somewhat erroneous, and we shall see if the October update installs, when it's available.

Thanks for the follow-up!

Although all the previous monthly updates were successfully "manually" installed from the Microsoft Catalog, the latest KB4038777 (Sept 2017) and optional update, still fail, even after re-running the batch file you provided, and even when trying an install from MS Catalog. Will provide the CBS log soon. I need to let the user get to work at this point.

BTW double-checked these other suspects: time, date, and time zone are correct, and Windows shows as properly activated.

Please download the attached file.
Right-click it and select Run as Administrator.
A CMD window will appear, please wait for it to finish, and then do the following:

Download this file:Microsoft Update Catalog for your OS (Windows 7 x64)
Try installing the update via the downloaded copy. Attach CBS.log if it fails again.

Followed your instructions, sorry to say that the update failed again. CBS.log attached as .zip file. Also attached screencap of failure message (logged in and run as administrator). Thanks!

Adding this: the interesting thing (read my earlier posts) is that I ran several rollup updates from the catalog - ones that failed in the past - and they ran fine - up until September.

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put

tags around the log to break up the text.

SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt
  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

Sorry to say, we are now going around in circles. I have already tried this at least twice, with no luck. Have you got any other suggestions?

No, we are not. Each time a new file is replaced and we make some further progress. These fixes are very complex and take time, so please bear with me and follow my instructions.
