Hello,

I have a laptop with a Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit OS. Recently, I've had some problems with the cooling system, involving numerous random shutdowns, I am afraid a few times during update configuration/installation. As a result, when trying to update now I get the following error codes:

8007054f
80070490

and the computer reverts back the changes.

Please advise me on how to proceed with this (possibly including, as a first step, what further information to provide, if necessary).

Thanks.

Re: Windows 7 repeatedly fails to install updates

Have you sorted out the cooling issue first? That's paramount above anything else. If not, anything done to fix the update issue is moot.

Re: Windows 7 repeatedly fails to install updates

Thanks for replying.

Yes, I have taken it for repair and, for the time being at least, it seems to be in order. However, the updates still cannot be installed.

Re: Windows 7 repeatedly fails to install updates

OK, since the cooling issue is sorted out let's take a look. Please do the following.

SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt
  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

Re: Windows 7 repeatedly fails to install updates

Sorry for the delay in replying - the file did turn out to be bigger than the upload limit, would 4share be ok to use?

Re: Windows 7 repeatedly fails to install updates

This should be the link; please let me know if it works. (By the way, for completeness I will mention here that the result was that no integrity violations were found).

Re: Windows 7 repeatedly fails to install updates

Log looks good. Please do the following.

Step#1 - System Update Readiness Tool (SUR)
1. Download and run the following file.
2. When it asks you if you wish to install, please answer yes. Note: It could take 15 minutes or more to run. Please don't cancel.
3. You will get an Installation Complete screen when it's done running.
4. Please attach the log from the following location. C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log
Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

Re: Windows 7 repeatedly fails to install updates

Actually, before starting the thread here, I had tried to do several things on my own (if beneficial, I could list them in more detail), and one of them was running the SURT. Indeed, it did hang for quite a while (I think about 6 hours), and I believe this is the log file asked for. If need be, of course, I could run it again.

Re: Windows 7 repeatedly fails to install updates

That will work. Please do the following.

Step#1 - SFCFix Script
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.
  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop. If you still have this on your desktop from downloading previously, you don't need to re-download.
  2. Download the file below, SFCScript.txt, and save this to your Desktop.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCScript.txt.
  5. Drag the file SFCScript.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please

Re: Windows 7 repeatedly fails to install updates

Here is the file, not sure if it is important, but - I actyally ran the tool twice - the first time it displayed a message that it cannot connect to a server or something in this sense, so I repeated once again - with the same message, but otherwise it seems to have done what it was meant to (and, I edited the path in the header a bit):

Excellent. Please do the following again.

Re: Windows 7 repeatedly fails to install updates

What happens now is the following:

For one of the two files that I got error messages about, I had donwloaded the manual installation package, previously it would not install, and now I was able to install it - after the restart, it is listed in the download history as successfully installed, so I assume everything should be in order.

On the other hand, since I had turned off automatic updating to avoid installing/reverting every time I power the computer on or off, trying to install through Windows Update now hangs at 0 KB total, 0% complete - I left the computer on overnight, and in the morning it was still at 0. I am not sure if this would be a related issue or not.

Re: Windows 7 repeatedly fails to install updates

The issue may be resolved so let's turn back on automatic updating and see.

If you haven't already you may want to manually download and install the 2nd update that you were having issues with as well.

Re: Windows 7 repeatedly fails to install updates

I am not sure where exactly on the scale of silliness this falls, but - somehow, I succeeded to download the updates and install them (using Windows Update) - with a message that installation was successful - then postponed restarting, and then tripped against the power cable and the computer shut down. Then, when configuring at startup, it gave a message that the installation was unsuccessful, and reverted. That somehow got, of all things, my browser corrupted - I don't know if there weren't other, less visible problems - and since I didn't feel like reinstalling (the browser), and maybe missing the other possible problems as well, I restored the system using the restore point from before the update installation. Then I tried installing the updates again, they did install with a 'successful' message again, but upon restart the configuration failed - the reverting lasted for a long time, perhaps 4 hours - and this is my current situation.

Shall I run the SURT again, or do something else?

Thanks.

Re: Windows 7 repeatedly fails to install updates

Let's do the following first.

Step#1 - ChkDsk Repair
1. Click your Start Orb in the lower left of your computer and type cmd in the search box.
2. Once the cmd program is found, right-click on it with your mouse and select Run as administrator as shown below.
ElevateCommandPrompt.JPG

3. Answer Yes when asked to allow.
4. You should now have a black window open that you can type in to.
5. Please type chkdsk /R and then press enter. Note: There is a space after the command chkdsk and before the forward slash
6. You will get a prompt telling you chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use. Answer Y and hit enter to schedule the run at next boot.
7. Reboot your computer and chkdsk will run. Let it complete please.
8. Right-click ListChkdskResult.exe and select Run as administrator (Allow if prompted)and a text file will open (and also be saved on the desktop as ListChkdskResult.txt).
Please copy the contents of this file and paste into your next post.

Re: Windows 7 repeatedly fails to install updates

Just a quick question - where to find the ListChkdskResult.exe in 8. above, if it was meant as a link, it doesn't seem to be working.
