I recently had my SSD run a checkdisk and identify multiple corrupt files. I have run sfc /scannow and system update readiness tool from Microsoft, and resolved any easy missing KBs, but am now stumped and about 62 missing or corrupt manifests that don't seem to be on the Windows 7 Ultimate disk original disk I have, or from Service Pack 1 executable. I originally had some errors about missing or corrupted files, and managed to fix those by reinstalling the related drivers, but now my sound card does not play any sounds. I had a Windows 7 RC on another drive, and this loaded fine and sounds were playing through the speakers, so I realised there must be some problems remaining on the underlying Win 7 Ultimate partition. This is what lead me to sign up for this forum, as I couldn't find any useful resource online that could help me diagnose the errors I am receiving. I look forwards to seeing how this issue will get resolved. CBS.zip to follow.

Hi and welcome to Sysnative. Please do the following so I can gather more info.

Step#1 - System Update Readiness Tool (SUR)
1. Download and run the following file.
2. When it asks you if you wish to install, please answer yes. Note: It could take 15 minutes or more to run. Please don't cancel.
3. You will get an Installation Complete screen when it's done running.
4. Please attach the log from the following location. C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log
Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

Looks like they are all from VirtualPC.

However, I have noticed that windows update has kb3068708 (optional update) and kb3061518 (important update) that are continuously failing to install. Also since this whole issue started, my Realtek HD Audio is not playing any sound, even though booting from Win 7 RC from the same machine, sound works fine. I have gone through much troubleshooting including reinstalling drivers from original motherboard media, all the way to sourcing latest driver from vendor site. Disabling features of Sound, turning audio off and on from BIOS etc.. I had my fingers crossed that fixing the windows update issues with the system update readiness tool would help resolve both these issues.

Re: CheckSUR Unavailable Repair Files

I don't know if fixing your Windows Update issues will fix the others but you never know. Let's at least get that resolved first. Let's do another round.

Step#1 - Fix Some Missing Files
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Please download the attached file, Packs.zip and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Right-click on the file and select Extract All...
  3. Tick the box labelled Show extracted files when complete then click Extract
  4. A window will open showing a Manifests folder.
  5. Open the Manifests folder and copy the files into the following folder. If the Manifests folder doesn't exist within Winsxs you will need to create it.
    C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Winsxs\Manifests
  6. Run the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) again.
  7. When the SURT finishes installing, zip up and attach the following log file:
    C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log

Re: CheckSUR Unavailable Repair Files

How weird. Those are sometimes very complex to fix. I find it easiest if you just send me a copy of your COMPONENTS hive.

Please navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and copy the COMPONENTS file to your desktop. Zip it up, upload to SendSpace and just provide the link.
Note: If you get an in-use error when trying this, reboot your machine and try again.

Smooth! So system update readiness tool is now showing all errors fixed! CheckSUR4.zip attached.

KB3061518 and KB3068708 last gave error Code 80073701, about an hour and a half ago. Have not retested, but will do so after this thread.

Re: CheckSUR Unavailable Repair Files

Awesome. If the updates don't install please do the following to make sure nothing has crept up.

SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt
  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.
