An older relative of mine called complaining of computer problems. She was vague so I got her set up with Teamviewer and took a look arount. Unfortunately, I live too far away to stop by. It's Windows 7 Home Premium SP1, 64 bit.
Windows Update was showing a .Net patch from Feb. 2016 as the next thing to be installed, but the event viewer does show some updates were installed up until 9/15/16. I tried to run that patch and it spent forever checking for updates. Microsoft Security Essentials only updates manually. There is a gap in the restore points from Jan. 2014 to May 2017. I looked at (but didn't touch) the files in c:\windows\system32\confg\regback and while none are at 0, they haven't updated since July or Sept. 2016.
From the first time I ran the System Update Readiness Tool: (short version, I have the entire log)

Security Essentials shows no history of problems and Malware Bytes scan came up clean. I ran Dell's diagnostics and it didn't flag anything.
