Hello! I hope I am doing this right ;) I found you all by comments of other people on various websites and such trying to research an error code I am getting when trying to do windows update. Thank you SO much~ I hope you can figure out my poor little pc!

Specs: Asus laptop, core i7, windows 7
History: I admit, i have neglected updating. I did not realize it had not updated since around 2015.
Problem: I was trying to calibrate my monitor since I edit photos for my clothing designs, and it would not let me. Error: "Display Color Calibration can't save the new calibration. Transaction support within the specified resource manager is not started or was shut down due to an error"

I then tried removing "Asus Splendid Utility" after reading that can take over calibration issues, however, it just "hung." while I was trying to uninstall. I do not know if it completely uninstalled, but it is not in my add/remove programs anymore.

I then thought okay go check to make sure windows is updated, and it wasn't. When i go to update, whether I try 1 update or more one of two things happens. 1: It just hangs there forever as if looking for updates (it does say however there is about 62 updates), or it fails giving this code: 0071A91 Also, for a while there, I was having to push the power button to shut down the computer because it would not shut down (however it does now).

What i have done:
1. I ran Malware Bytes, it found one thing and fixed it.
2. Ran CC Cleaner
3. Ran ChkDsk - did have errors
4. Ran sfc /scannow

CBS: The zipped cbs file was over 50 mb and wouldn't let me upload, so here is a dropbox link to it: Dropbox - CBS (Not sure if this is how you want this?)

Darnit, I can't edit a thread. I didn't want to bump this as I see you all are busy being superman to all of us window-issue people :) I can wait! I am just wanting to give you an update, in case my thread update interferes with any possible remedies you may have for me so that way you do not have to backtrack or redo any unnecessary work when you do get to my issue :)

And again, I can wait~ I am really wanting my windows to be able to calibrate my monitor and hoping this is linked! But I do know it is important to have my windows updated. :)

In the meantime, I have updates (to my thread).

After posting this the other night, I went to shut down, and my computer said updating. It did 3 updates. I am not sure how, as I turned my computer off and on several times that day, and just before going to sleep it decided to do 3 of the updates when I decided to go to bed (figures). I thought well let's try this again. So today I try to update and it says 53 failed, and gives 2 error messages. (Before I only had error #1 below).

1. 80071A91
2. 80070002

So after researching the second error (that i never had before), i found this and this is what I did:

  • Start>Run
  • type cmd and press enter
  • type net stop wuauserv and press enter
  • type rename c:\windows\SoftwareDistribution softwaredistribution.oldand press enter
  • type net start wuauserv and press enter
  • type exit and press enter

I did this, and rebooted. Then my AVG decided to update (Incidentally, AVG has been updated and always working). So, I decided for good measure to run a full system scan, which it is doing now.

I then went into Microsoft Update and clicked Update. It searched for a while, but I let it do its thing, and it found 53 updates. I clicked install. It is currently at 24% (it never ever showed this % before, it was always 0% with the green bar searching).

Update: Okay, so it said 52 updates failed. I am clicking "try again." Perhaps it is doing 1 update at a time? I am not sure. I am also not sure if that 53 updates was accurate now (perhaps it was indeed at 52 before), but maybe now it will move down to 51 or stay at 52- we shall see.

It finished: 52 updates failed, with same 2 codes above.

I will keep you all posted. I will update if anything significant occurs. And again, take your time :)

Hi and welcome to Sysnative. Sorry for the delay. Do you still require assistance?

Good morning Brian!
I do.

Here is an update however: It seems periodically, when I go to shut down at night, windows attempts an update. The number of updates needed number goes down, for example, it is now at 43. However, when I look at the installed updates screen, all of them have failed. None have the word "successful." So I am not sure why the number is going down, nor what it is that makes the computer decide to all of a sudden do an update. When i click on to update, it still hangs, or just plain says failed.

Thank you again so much for any help!

OK, please zip up and attach your c:\windows\logs\cbs\cbs.log file.

You may have to copy this file to your desktop before you can zip it.

Hmm I think i tried to last time and it was over 50 mb - if it is too big do you want me to make a dropbox file? And will this be different from the first one or should i make it run again

Yes please do if it's too big. And yes it will be different than last time as it will contain only the errors I need to see related to that update.

Let's start with the following.

Clear Transactional Logfiles
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good, especially if the computer is not experiencing these exact issues. Do not attempt this fix unless instructed to do so. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it one at a time and press enter after eachone. Type Y and press enter if you are asked "Are you sure?" to any line. Ignore any failure messages, they are perfectly normal and nothing to worry about.

fsutil resource setautoreset true %SystemDrive%\

attrib -r -s -h %SystemRoot%\System32\Config\TxR\*
del %SystemRoot%\System32\Config\TxR\*

attrib -r -s -h %SystemRoot%\System32\SMI\Store\Machine\*
del %SystemRoot%\System32\SMI\Store\Machine\*.tm*
del %SystemRoot%\System32\SMI\Store\Machine\*.blf
del %SystemRoot%\System32\SMI\Store\Machine\*.regtrans-ms

I wasn't sure if these "in use by other processes" was the fault messages you were referring to, so here is a SS of what came up.

It installed successfully. It then asked me to restart. I restarted, and then i realized oh no you didn't say to restart- my apologies if I wasn't supposed to!

Yes, please do. And then at that point I think you will be fixed. You can then check for Windows Updates and install any that are available. Give it a shot.

The update installed and asked me to reboot. I did that right after your post. It started to reboot and said: Configuring Windows. 30percent complete. Do not turn off your computer. I think it has been an hour and is still saying same thing at 30 percent. Currently typing from my kindle. I do not mind waiting but thought I would give an update in case this is not right.

Sounds like it's stuck if it's been an hour. You can wait a little longer if you wish but if it doesn't get any farther up I would just power off your computer and back on.
