When done via Windows Update, it locates, downloads and seems to install the updates (though it says installing x of 13 updates, not 15??), then right where it would either claim to be done or insist on a restart, it gives the following errors.
Code 800B0100
Code 80073712
When done via stand-alone each one claims to be "not applicable" though if that is true shouldn't Automatic Update know that and stop insisting on them???
Have tried many different solutions found on-line such as restarting PC and retrying, using the windows update troubleshooter and windows update readiness tool, running "sfc /scannow", making sure date, timezones, etc are correct and running "wuauclt.exe /resetauthorization /detectnow" and using the DISM scanhealth and restorehealth, which gives "error 87". I'm sure there are a few other things I have tried which I have forgotten...
The only suggested thing I did not try was resetting the Update Components by modifying the Registry, which I know can be quite risky, but am prepared to as a last resort.
***The update readiness tool did give these errors, to which I also found no new ideas for correcting, short of registry modification.
Windows Update error 0x80073712
Cryptographic service components are not registered
The PC seems to be working just fine without these updates, but I find the constant reminder of updates mildly annoying so any further ideas would be greatly appreciated.
