Hi,
I have a new '2nd hand' Lenovo X220 laptop, i5, 120GB SSD with Windows 7.
The update January, 2017 Security KB3212646 does not update. It fails and reverts to back to what ever preceded it.

Any ideas or steps to take to resolve this? I'm not very computer savvy unfortunately, so any help is much appreciated.

Thanks,
Rob

Hi and welcome to Sysnative. Please start with the following.

SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt
  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

Hi,
Thanks for assisting me with this issue.
I have (hopefully) attached the cbs.txt file.

I hope it reveals something.

Excellent. Thanks.

Now attempt to install KB3212646 again. When it fails please provide me a copy of your current CBS.log. You can copy the file from c:\windows\logs\cbs\cbs.log to your desktop and then zip up and attach.

Re: Windows 7 - January 2017 Security KB3212646 does not update?

Thanks. Please do the following.

Step#1 - Run Windows Repairs
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.
1. Download Windows Repair (All-in-One) Portable to your desktop.
2. Once the file is downloaded, right-click on the file on your desktop and choose Extract All...

3. Keep the defaults and click the Extract button.
4. A folder named tweaking.com_windows_repair_aio will be extracted to the desktop. Once the extraction is complete the folder will open.
5. Inside this folder, there is a folder named Tweaking.com - Windows Repair. Open this folder as well.

6. Double-click on Repair_Windows.exe to open. Note: Please make sure all of your programs are closed and anything you were working on is saved as we will be rebooting.
7. When the program opens, click the Reboot to Safe Mode button at the bottom of the screen. Answer Yes to allow.
8. Once rebooted into Safe Mode, open the program again. When the program opens, click the Repairs tab and click the Open Repairs button.
9. A backup of your registry will be made. After a few moments you will have many options from which you can choose.
10. Please click the Unselect All button and then click to enable only the following ones:

05 - Repair WMI
06 - Repair Windows Firewall
10 - Remove Policies Set By Infection
14 - Remove Temp Files
15 - Repair Proxy Settings
17 - Repair Windows Updates
21 - Repair MSI (Windows Installer)

11. Ensure the Restart check box is selected and click the Start Repairs button in the lower right of the screen. This may take some time to run so be patient.

Re: Windows 7 - January 2017 Security KB3212646 does not update?

Hi,
I seem to have hit the buffers somewhat....
When the program opens I select reboot to safe mode but it starts up normally.
I cant get my PC into safe mode. When i press F8 on start up the boot screen it gives me the option to either:
1. Boot to windows
2. restore laptop back to defaults and wipe the hard drive. (not advisable I think!)
(see attached)

also, via the MS config method, I could not select 'safe boot'? It seems there is no operation system in the boot tab?
(see attached)

Very strange?
Does the procedure have to be done in safe mode?
Any other ideas?

regards,
Rob.

Re: Windows 7 - January 2017 Security KB3212646 does not update?

It's best in Safe Mode but could work without this. Go ahead and do without booting to Safe Mode.

Re: Windows 7 - January 2017 Security KB3212646 does not update?

Hi,
CURSES!!!
It didn't work. KB3212646 fails, and reverts back.
I finally got the PC into safe mode and tried it but same result.
I've tried it about 5 times, only checking the boxes of the elements you mentioned for repair.. I think we're close though..
Any ideas?
Rob.

Please do the following.

FRST Scan
1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
2. Right click to run as administrator. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
3. Please ensure you place a check mark in the Addition.txt check box at the bottom of the form before running (if not already).
4. Press Scan button.
5. It will produce a log called FRST.txt in the same directory the tool is run from (which should now be the desktop)
6. Please copy and paste log back here.
7. Another log (Addition.txt - also located in the same directory as FRST64.exe) will be generated Please also paste that along with the FRST.txt into your reply.

Until we resolve your issue, please uninstall the following two programs.
Avast Free Antivirus
PeerBlock 1.2 (r693)

Then do the following and let me know of any errors.

Create Restore Point
1. Please click your start button, right-click on the Computer menu item and select Properties as show below.

2. Click on the Advanced system settings link.
AdvancedSystemSettings.JPG

3. Click the System Protection tab and then click the Create button.

4. You will be asked to provide a description. Please type Sysnative and click Create.

SystemProtection.JPG

5. You will get a message telling you when it's complete. Click Close on the message. Note: If you get any error message trying to create the restore point let me know and don't continue.

Hi Brian,
As directed I have created a 'restore point' (though I don't know it's destination?)
No error messages were received.

I have also uninstalled the following programs:
Avast Free Antivirus
PeerBlock 1.2 (r693)

I've unplugged the PC from the network and switched off WiFi.

What's next? Do I run the repair process again, or something else?
Thanks for your continued support.
Rob.

In your screen shot you provided (thank you for this) I see an item named (C:) (Missing). Can you please remove this item from the list? You will need to click Configure to do so. Then select the one named WINDOWS (C:) (System) and click configure and enable it.

Let me know when complete and if possible provide a screen shot like you did previously.

Hi Brian,
OK....
(C:) (Missing) now removed.
WINDOWS (C:) (System) now 'on'

Screen shot attached... awaiting your next instruction..:smile9:
regards,
Rob.
