Hello,

I was trying to update my friends win 7 machine to SP1 and found I was unable to. I tried running windows update and receive error 8007372, so I tried running the System Update Readiness Tool and it either stays on "Installing update" or tells me the update could not be installed. I've tried running sfc and that didn't work, it stops at 21 percent. Any help is appreciated.

Thank you. I've run it and it said "Install failed with the following error number: 0x80073712"

Thanks. I know you have done this previously but I need a fresh log. Please do the following.

SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt
  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

Here it is. Not sure if this is still important, but just to let you know. It stopped at "Verification 21% Complete" with the message "Windows Resource Protection could not preform the requested operation" again.

Understood. Please do the following.

Install Update with DISM

  1. Download this update and save to your desktop. The file name will be windowsupdateagent30-x64.cab.zip.
  2. Right-click on this file and select Extract All... Keep the defaults and click the Extract button. You can close the folder window that opens
  3. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  4. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator. Go ahead and allow if you receive the UAC prompt.
  5. Copy and paste the following command into the command prompt window and press enter.

    dism /online /add-package /packagepath:%userprofile%\desktop\windowsupdateagent30-x64.cab\windowsupdateagent30-x64.cab
  6. You should receive the message:
    The operation completed successfully.
Restart Windows to complete this operation. <---You may not get this line.
Do you want to restart the computer now (Y/N)? <---You may not get this line.

Go ahead and do so if prompted. Let me know what errors if any come up.

It seems all of them had errors. Here's the exact output.

Code:
C:\Windows\system32>dism /online /add-package /packagepath:%userprofile%\desktop
\windowsupdateagent30-x64.cab\windowsupdateagent30-x64.cab

Do you or your friend have the Windows 7 Media available? We could run a repair to fix the issue. It won't harm any existing programs on the machine or any existing data.

Sorry it took so long to get back to you. I had a heck of a time getting it to actually finish the install, but everything works and the computer is up to date. Thank you very much for your help.
