Hello Everyone,

I have a Windows 7, 32bit version that was going through an update installation when the power went off. This seems to have left the system in a state where it will not install any of the MS security updates, however it seems perfectly fine with driver updates and updates to windows defender.

I have gone through all the MS documents online and removed the "SoftwareDistribution" and "Catroot*" directories from the machine, ran their tools to fix it and have accomplished nothing in terms of getting the system to install security updates.

Be aware that I select only security updates and pick and choose from the so called "Important" updates available based on what is useful to me and not MS. I have installed the SSU KB3177467 so I know that is not a related problem.

This all said, I have attached the CBS log information along with the SFCfix log as per your instructions.

Thanks in advance for any help you may provide.

Richard

Please tell me have you recently tested or replaced RAM on your machine?

Not for about 4 years. I added 2G RAM back then bringing the machine up to a wild 4G , pretty much being the final useful size for a 32-bit OS. I have never run a memory test program as I have not seen any need to. The machine is super stable, runs for many weeks between intentional reboots and has only ever BSOD when one of the hard drives fried (literally caught fire in the power connector). It is my primary desktop development machine (VStudio C++) and has the snot beaten out of it (memory usage wise) every day except weekends.

Was there something in the logs which might point to memory corruption ? I can run a bare metal memtest on it over the weekend to see if it has any issues.

Richard

I ran a brief scan with Memtest86-v3.3 over lunch. Over the course of almost 2 hours it found no errors. I will let it run all weekend long for a more complete test.

Just to give you another potential datapoint, when the power went off, the system was applying the downloaded updates. The power did not go off "cleanly" in that it flickered more like a brownout prior to going completely off.

After that, the security updates always failed with an error 0x8007371b

Would you like me to regenerate the scan logs ?

Thanks

Richard

No, I will wait for the definitive test results. Leave Memtest running for 8 passes, one stick at a time.

When able, provide the following:

Retrieve Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to a file sharing service and just provide the link here.

Good morning. The memtest ran for 48 hours, completed 27 passes and found no errors. Are there any additional steps I should take ?

Thanks

Richard

Hi!

Install Update with DISM

  1. Download this update and save to your desktop. The file name will be Windows6.1-KB2604115-x86.cab.zip.
  2. Right-click on this file and select Extract All... Click the Extract button. You can close the folder window that opens
  3. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  4. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator. Go ahead and allow if you receive the UAC prompt.
  5. Copy and paste the following command into the command prompt window and press enter.

    dism /online /add-package /packagepath:%userprofile%\desktop\Windows6.1-KB2604115-x86.cab
  6. You should receive the message:
    The operation completed successfully.
Restart Windows to complete this operation. <---You may not get this line.
Do you want to restart the computer now (Y/N)? <---You may not get this line.

Go ahead and do so if prompted. Let me know what errors if any come up. If you do get errors, please zip/attach your CBS.log

I followed your instructions. It failed with an error as follows:

Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool
Version: 6.1.7600.16385

Image Version: 6.1.7601.18489

Processing 1 of 1 -
An error occurred - Package_for_KB2604115 Error: 0x800736b3

Error: 14003

The referenced assembly is not installed on your system.
The DISM log file can be found at C:\Windows\Logs\DISM\dism.log

Attached you will find the CBS and DISM logs. View attachment cbs181107.zip

Thanks for your help !

Let's do some fixing:

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the attached file, SFCFixScript.txt, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFixScript.txt - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFixScript.txt.
  5. Drag the file SFCFixScript.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a log should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this into your next post for me to analyse please - put

tags around the log to break up the text.

Is there any documentation about windows update that you guys have, that you would be willing to share ? Somehow trying to figure it out by looking through log files, gathering info from the net and reverse engineering parts seems like a long process if someone else has done it before.

Ran the fix script you provided. Here are the results:
