Hello,

I am receiving "files missing" or "files not found" message when attempting to upgrade my Sony Vaio laptop from Windows 7 to Windows 7 SP1.
After running SUR, the repair files listed below come up as "unavailable":

I have not had any success locating these packages. I have also looked on the Repair Disk for Windows 7 to no avail.

Your forum has helped many people and I hope you can help me as well.

Thank you

Hi and welcome to Sysnative. That doesn't look normal. Please start with the following.

Retrieve Components/Software Hives
Note: The Software have has confidential and sensitive information in it so please send me a PM with a link to that particular hive so it's not in the public form.
  • Please download the Freeware RegBak from here: Acelogix Software - Download products
You will find it at the bottom of the page that the link brings you to.
  • Go ahead and install this program and accept all the defaults. After the last install screen the program should open.
  • Click the New Backup button. Accept the defaults and simply click Start.
  • When it says Finished successfully, click the Close button.
  • This will bring you back to the main screen of the program. You will see one entry in this list with the date that you did it. Right-click on this line-item and select Explore Backup...
  • This will bring you into the folder where the backup was made. You should see a Users folder and a Windows folder along with a couple other files. Double-click on the Windows folder to open it. Then open the System32 folder and then config folder. You should see around 6 files in here, two of which are named COMPONENTS and SOFTWARE.
  • Copy these two files to your Desktop. If the COMPONENTS file does not exist, please fetch it instead from C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS.
  • Now right click on these files on your desktop and select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
  • Then please upload the zip file(s) to your favourite file sharing website (it will be too big to upload here). Examples of services to upload to are Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and then just provide the link in your reply.
  • You can close any open windows you have as well as the RegBack program now.

Zipped file has been uploaded.

(My apologies for not sending the file sooner; I just read your latest email :s5: )

Downloaded and successfully installed Security Update KB2393802.
Should I look for anything in particular afterwards?

After installing SP1, I received these messages:

Install was not successful.
Element not found.
Error: ERROR_NOT_FOUND(0x80070490)

Please advise, and thanks again for your help! :s1:

OK, we need to fix the following before SP1 will install.

Code:
!!! sto: Failed to find driver update 'C:\Windows\WinSxS\amd64_usbvideo.inf_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.16543_none_8a1a2513d42628c3\usbvideo.inf' in Driver Store. Error = 0x00000490

Please do the following.

Install Driver Manually
1. Click your Start button and type cmd in the search box.
2. Right-click on cmd that appears in the search results and select Run as administrator. Click Yes to the User Account Control dialog if it appears.
3. Copy/Paste the following into the command-prompt window and then hit enter on the keyboard. Note: You will need to right-click your mouse and select paste in order to paste into the window. You can't use the keyboard shortcut.
pnputil -a C:\Windows\WinSxS\amd64_usbvideo.inf_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.16543_none_8a1a2513d42628c3\usbvideo.inf

4. You will likely get a prompt that looks like the following. Please click "Install this driver software anyway".

5. If all goes well, in the command prompt window you should see text that resembles "Driver package added successfully".

Let me know how this step goes please. Thanks.

Hi Brian,

I followed your instructions and received the "Driver package added successfully" message :thumbsup2:

Hi Brian,

I've started the install. It started configuring and it restarted a few times, like usual, but this last time it returned to a blank screen. The screen is on, it's just blank. I'm not sure what it's doing or if I should power it down and then start it up?

The yellow disk or CPU light is blinking. Please advise.

Thanks!

Hi Brian,

Well I powered it down and up and and after the "safe mode" message displayed it automatically started "normal" and continued "Configuring Service Pack". After shutting down automatically, Windows started and displayed another "Preparing to configure Windows" message. After this, I received the successful "Windows 7 Service Pack is now installed"!!!

I will now look to see the details on the SP1 update and what it provides.

Thank you so much!! I've been at this on and off for the past 2.5 years with no success until now. With all the forums out there and after reviewing many entries, I was wary of what to expect from any of the "Microsoft" related forums. Once I found Sysnative.com a couple weeks ago, I felt confident you could help with my issue.

My next question is, should I turn on the Windows update? I currently have it set to "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them". I usually only install the important updates and the last time I've installed an update was probably a couple years ago. I do see a bunch of "Windows Defender" updates so those must download and install on their own.

I will be sending a donation to sysnative.com!!!
