Had a LOT of trouble getting this far...Win7 installed, all (most) updates installed, computer is stable, but having a problem that I am certain was caused by Update.

The problem now is that on reboot, the wifi is very slow to connect, and all of the native Win7 troubleshooters (like network troubleshoot problems) claim there is a 80070490 error preventing them from working.

SFC reports corrupted files that can't be fixed, and SFCfix says there is not anything there for it to work with...

I have tried MS troubleshooters FixIt50123, Windows Update Diagnostic, kb947821 SURT, and others. I had to fix many, many errors to make it this far...

Please help me solve this issue. If possible, I REALLY want to avoid the "in-place upgrade" unless updates are retained somehow. The thought of going after those updates again...after all the trouble I had...it's too sad to contemplate.

Anyway, I have attached some files, so let me know if you need more info.

BTW, if your having trouble with 80040057, try repair MS .NET Framework in Uninstall Programs...it worked for me. I'm pretty sure it cleared a SFC corrupt files can't be fixed message, too.

OK, I have solved the slow wifi loading issue by disabling the Intel Common User Interface (x3) in StartUp.

The remaining issue is Win7 Trouble-Shooter wizards do not work, indicating error 80070490, which probably relates back to the SFC files cannot be fixed thing.

I'll keep at it...

Hi senshudan :)

Do you still need assistance with this issue?

To the extent that troubleshooters can be repaired in place...error 80070490.

I have come to the conclusion that the updates cause the problem, so any solution that involves reinstalling updates is not viable...

Is that possible, or am I wrong?

It's still too early to say what is causing that issue.

Right now, is that issue preventing you from installing Windows Updates? If so, how? Only installing them, or even using the "Check for updates" option gives you an error code?

Sorry for the misunderstanding...
Windows updates are (finally) loading beautifully and the updates system is behaving well. The Windows Update issue is solved.

I have only two issues remaining, which (I believe) were caused by updates, and (I believe) are related:
1. SFC reports corrupt files which cannot be fixed (and SFCfix sees no problem)
2. Win7 troubleshooter wizards (all) do not work, reporting error 80070490.

I think I could live with it (but it still bugs me)...

The thing is that according to your CBS.log, SFC didn't return any error. Let's run it one more time.

System File Checker (SFC)
Follow the instructions below to run a SFC scan on your system and to provide the CBS log in your next reply;
  • On Windows Vista & 7, click on the Windows Start Menu, then enter cmd in the search box, right-click on the cmd icon and select
    Spcusrh.png
    Run as Administrator
  • On Windows 8, drag your cursor in the bottom-left corner, and right-click on the metro menu preview, then select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • On Windows 8.1, right click on the Windows logo in the bottom-left corner and select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • Enter the command below and press on Enter;
    Code:
    sfc /scannow
    Note: There's a space between "sfc" and "/scannow";
  • Once the scan is complete, enter the command below and press on Enter
    Code:
    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
  • A file called cbs.txt will have appeared on your Desktop. Upload the file on Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive and post the download URL for it here;
Note: Please note that the CBS.log is volatile, which means that if you don't upload it after the SFC scan is completed, it won't have the information from the scan anymore. So archive it and upload it as soon as you can.

Once again, SFC returned a clean CBS.log. Let's see if it's still the same for SURT.

System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) - Scan
Follow the instructions below to run a scan with the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) and provide a log;
  • Download the right version of SURT for your system;
    • Your version of Windows is:
  • Once downloaded, execute the installer, and go throught the installation (this process can take around 15-20 minutes);
  • On completion, a log will be created in C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log;
  • Attach this log in your next reply;
Alternatively, if these instructions are unclear for you, you can follow the tutorial below.

A question (or two) for you: when I ran sfc, it came back with some corrupt files cannot be fixed...
1. why doesn't that leave something in the cbs log? is that normal?
2. doesn't the other error (80070490) point to cbs issues?

Again, thank you for assisting me...it's amazingly kind and generous of you to take the time to do this.

A question (or two) for you: when I ran sfc, it came back with some corrupt files cannot be fixed...
1. why doesn't that leave something in the cbs log? is that normal?

Was this after you ran the SFC scan I asked for, or the one prior to that?

2. doesn't the other error (80070490) point to cbs issues?

That error code is pretty generic. It can show up at times in a CBS.log after running SFC, but depending on what line calls it, it can be safely ignored.

To your question above:
I followed your instructions carefully and sent you the file immediately after running sfc.
(If I can't / won't follow instructions, this exercise is pointless, right?)
So yes, since you have kindly taken the time to assist, I will follow your instructions to the letter.
If I can't for any reason, I will tell you that and explain the issue.

I mean, did SFC return you the error message where it says it found corrupt files and couldn't repair them when you ran the SFC scan I asked for, or when you ran yours prior to posting this thread? :)

I ran sfc (as per your request) and when it finished it indicated some files could not be fixed. I then posted the resulting log.
That is why I think it's odd that you say it is clean...because sfc said corrupted files. But then, I don't really know how it is supposed to work, either.

I don't understand it either, since SFC doesn't report any corrupt files (nor any repair) made in the CBS.log. The best would be to wait until Thusday (for Patch Tuesday, May 2016), and see if you are able to download and install your Windows Updates without any issues.

Also, giving you an old log file would constitute "not following directions".
When I tell you I will follow your request to the letter, I mean I intend to be anal about it. It will be done exactly per your instruction with NO deviation.

If the updates go through, then there's nothing to worry about :) It's when the updates don't go through or fails to install that it means that there's something wrong.

New developments:

I discovered USB ports (all) are not working with mass storage (thumb drives, external HDD) because of driver error 52, unsigned drivers. The drivers are from MicroSoft, so I think it means that Win7 is corrupt in an area that deals with driver sigs. USB ports do work if I disable signiture enforcement.

SFC continues to report corrupt files that can't be fixed (I ran it & then got the log immediately). CBS.log - Google Drive

I saw on the MS site that re-installing KB2862330 might work (after all their primary fixes failed), so I tried it. I did not think this would be a big issue since the update was already installed, and I would simply uninstall & then put it back. However, putting it back (i.e., re-install) caused a BSOD on boot, so I had to restore.

In a similar vein, the Win10 nag kept coming back, even though I uninstalled KB3035583 and then hid it after a "check for updates". It should not have been able to re-install. (It also makes my wi-fi load slowly.)

So now I am really considering doing an upgrade in place to get a fresh start (will be the eleventh time, although the first 5 were from a corrupt ISO, so they don't count)...

Aura (or other mods) - please help me decide what to do...is this even fixable at this point? My wife says this laptop is ruining our marriage.

About that: I'm fixing this Dell 1555 (service tag 9322xk1) for a friend. It would not boot, and it turned out the HDD was crashed so badly it could not re-used, even after low-level formatting. (Had to use third party deep format utility, and after that you could write to it, but it would not read). So I put a Samsung 850 EVO 256gb SSD in. I'm installing Win7 Home Premium 64bit, which I have also done on 4 desktops and 3 other laptops. It always installed easily, and updates were never an issue. Until I met Dell (I'm an ASUS fanboy).
