Win7 Ultimate SP1 32bit - corruptions could not be fixed by sfcfix

Hi,

running Win7 Ultimate SP1 32bit shows no error messages.

However, suddenly windows does not remember the size of windows any more after a reboot. Folder and document windows are opened with their default size, they can be resized and closed, and when opened again windows remembers the last size used. But when the computer is rebooted, windows forgets the windows size chosen and the folder and document windows are opened with their default size again.

In addition, Microsoft Word suddenly asks to confirm the license agreement every time it is opened. Afterwards Microsoft Word runs as expected.

Sfc and sfcfix detect corruptions that can not be repaired automatically.

Kind regards

Max Willer

I rebooted the computer and sfc /scannow shows no errors / no integrity violations any more.

However, the run time errors are still there:

  • Windows does not remember the size of windows any more after a reboot. Folder and document windows are opened with their default size, they can be resized and closed, and when opened again windows remembers the last size used. But when the computer is rebooted, windows forgets the windows size chosen and the folder and document windows are opened with their default size again.
  • In addition, Microsoft Word asks to confirm the license agreement every time it is opened. Afterwards Microsoft Word runs as expected.

But this might be a different case and I'm very happy that the sfc issue has been resolved.

Peter, thank you very very much for your assistance.

Kind regards

Let's have a look at the other issues.

Step 1:
Check Windows Update again and report the result.

Step 2:
  1. Download the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop:
32-bit: Downloading Farbar Recovery Scan Tool
  2. Right-click to run the tool as administrator. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  3. Note: Ensure that the Addition.txt check box is checked at the bottom of the form within the Optional Scan area.
  4. Press the Scan button.
  5. Please wait for the tool to finish. It will produce two logfiles called FRST.txt and Addition.txt in the same directory the tool is run from (which should be the desktop)
  6. Post the logfiles FRST.txt and Addition.txt as attachment in your next reply.

Hi Peter,

thanks for your response.

In the mean-time, the problem with Microsoft Works is gone. Microsoft Works does not ask to accept EULA every time it is opened any more.

The other problem still exists:

The windows of pdf and text documents can be set to a certain size and be closed by SHIFT/X (upper right hand corner). When opened again, these windows have the same size as when they were closed. Windows remembers their last size - even after a reboot.

However, folder windows are opened always with a default size. They can be resized but Windows forgets their size when they are closed and opened again or when the computer is rebooted.

Windows Update says: No important updates available (WUpdate 200408.jpg).

Farbar produces files FRST.txt (FRST 200408.txt) and Addition.txt (Addition 200408.txt).

Thanks again for your assistance and kind regards

Step 1:
Warning: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Do not run this script on another machine.
  1. Download the attachment fixlist.txt and save it to your desktop.
  2. Right-click on FRST.exe and select "Run as administrator".
  3. Press the Fix button.
  4. The tool will now process fixlist.txt.
  5. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
  6. When finished, a log called Fixlog.txt will appear in the same directory the tool is run from.
  7. Post the logfile Fixlog.txt as attachment in your next reply.

Step 2:
Any improvement after this fix ?

Hi Peter,

thanks for your response.

As a precaution:

- I have disabled all non-Microsoft services in Autostart except ctfmon and AVMWLANClient (WLAN USB Stick).

- I have deactivated all non-Microsoft services in msconfig -> services.

- I have another Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 32bit system on the same computer on a different partition that is almost unused. This system does not have the misbehaviour as described.

Next I ran FRST.exe using fixlist.txt. I attach file Fixlog.txt.

Result:

When the system is rebooted after FRST has been run, the situation hasn't changed. Windows does not remember the last folder window size and position selected. Folder windows are opened with some default size and position.

If, however, the system is rebooted and msconfig is run as the very first action - without executing any option - and closed again, all is in good order: Windows remembers the last folder window size and position selected as desired. The system can be rebooted again, msconfig be run, and Windows still remembers the last folder window size and position selected.

What is so special about msconfig?

Kind regards

I didn't ask you to do that.
Did you run the given fixlist.txt multiple times ?

I don't know.

Please uninstall the following (cleaning) programs. They are not needed to run Windows and might be causing the issue you have.
(If being asked to restart the computer, please do and resume with the next item.)
  • Ashampoo WinOptimizer 16
  • Ashampoo WinOptimizer 2019
  • CCleaner
  • Glary Utilities 5.138
  • PC Wizard 2013.2.12 <- this program is no longer maintained
  • TuneUp Utilities 2014
  • Wise Registry Cleaner 10.2.7

Please report the result.

Hi Peter,

thanks for your response.

Did you run the given fixlist.txt multiple times ?

Yes, about 6 times without success.

Please uninstall the following (cleaning) programs. They are not needed to run Windows and might be causing the issue you have.
(If being asked to restart the computer, please do and resume with the next item.)
  • Ashampoo WinOptimizer 16
  • Ashampoo WinOptimizer 2019
  • CCleaner
  • Glary Utilities 5.138
  • PC Wizard 2013.2.12 <- this program is no longer maintained
  • TuneUp Utilities 2014
  • Wise Registry Cleaner 10.2.7

I uninstalled all of them.

I ran FRST and the fixlist.txt given about 6 times but Windows did not remember the folder window size and position when the folder window was closed and opened again or when the system was rebooted.

Next I created a new account 'Test' on the system. With the help of ReProfiler 3.0 I asssigned my profile folder C:\Users\Willer (user 'Willer') to the new user 'Test'.

After a reboot of the system I logged in as user 'Test' and encountered the same operating environment as user 'Willer'. Furthermore, Windows remembers the folder window size and position when the folder window is closed and opened again or when the system is rebooted. The problem disappeared!

Surprise: When I log into the original account 'Willer' the problem disappeared, too.

I am tempted to delete the now unneeded account 'Test' but I will make a backup first and monitor the situation for some time.

For the time being i consider the problem as solved.

Thank you very much for your assistance.

Kind regards

Max Willer

Your welcome, great that the issue is solved.
Note: Never run the same fixlist.txt multiple times. This will not help your computer and can mislead the helper with unexpected results in the log.

Rename FRST.exe into Uninstall.exe and run it. FRST will remove itself and its logfiles. Reboot the machine when prompted.

I will mark this thread as solved.
