I finally made a concerted effort yesterday to correct the problem. I had uncorrectable errors when I ran sfc /scannow with fde, fdeploy and gptext.dll but used a version of sfcfix I found to correct those errors and had hoped that it would also resolve the windows update problem. But without success.
Following your instructions in the forum I ran the programs and here are the results:
