Hello.
After fixing my main PC with the help of this forum, I have another patient here.
Windows 7 pro x64, fails to install the monthly security update KB4041678 from 2017-10. Error code is 80073712.
Of course, all subsequent updates also failed.
Again, all advice from the web failed, so I just kept using the machine with a somewhat bad feeling.

Maybe there's still hope for this machine...

Thanks in advance

Hi!

Install Update with DISM

  1. Download this update and save to your desktop. The file name will be Windows6.1-KB3207752-x64.cab.zip.
  2. Right-click on this file and select Extract All... Click the Extract button. You can close the folder window that opens
  3. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  4. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator. Go ahead and allow if you receive the UAC prompt.
  5. Copy and paste the following command into the command prompt window and press enter.

    dism /online /add-package /packagepath:%userprofile%\desktop\Windows6.1-KB3207752-x64.cab
  6. You should receive the message:
    The operation completed successfully.
Restart Windows to complete this operation. <---You may not get this line.
Do you want to restart the computer now (Y/N)? <---You may not get this line.

Go ahead and do so if prompted. Let me know what errors if any come up. If you do get errors, please zip/attach your CBS.log

Hi!
The operation completed successfully without asking for reboot.
Upon shutting the system down both 2017-10 and 2018-11 updates tried to install but still failed.

Step#1 - Capture Process Monitor Trace
1. Download and run Process Monitor. Leave this running while you perform the next steps.
2. Try installing the update just like you have in the past.
3. Stop Process Monitor as soon as it fails. You can simply do this by clicking the magnifying glass on the toolbar as shown below.

4. Select the File menu...Save... and save the file to your desktop. This is likely the default location. The name (unless changed) will be LogFile.PML. This is fine.
5. Zip up and attach the LogFile.PML file as well as your CBS.log

Okay, so I did a fresh reboot, ran procmon and instantly executed the KB4041678 update from file.
(Can't do it via the windows control panel since this machine is part of a domain - usually updates install upon shutdown)

First it tried the usual combination of 2017-10 Security Quality Update and 2018-11 Monthly Security Rollup, like it tired since I started this thread.
Again, failed the 2017-10 one, but surprisingly, it managed to install the 2018-11 one.

Next up, it tried to install this week's 2018-12 Security Quality Update, successfully, plus a bunch of MS-Office and .NET stuff, all that also succeeded.

Right now, it looks like it's happy and up to date. You've done it again as it seems.
I'll give it another day or so, in case the issues come back, but if they don't, the forum earned it's next donation from me. :thumbsup2:

After that, 2018-12 Monthly Security Quality Rollup KB4471318 was able to install successfully. I will keep an eye on the upcoming updates and report if there still are problems.
