Since the mid-March update, my laptop gets stuck at "PrePreparing to configure Windows/Do not turn off computer" when I shutdown Windows. Now when trying to update my computer, it gets stuck looking for updates forever. I tried to restore to the previous restore point, but the process timed out. I don't recall the error message.

I followed the instructions for updates problems and got the following:
1. sfc /scannow times out with "Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service."
2. SFCFix.exe did not find any errors. I'm attaching the log file.
3. I tried "DSIM /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth" and it exits with an error. I'm attaching the DSIM.log file.
4. I'm also attaching the CBS.log file.

Please let me know if/how I can resolve my issue. Thank you in advance for your help.

Hello and welcome!

I would like to start by testing the hard drive. Please backup all of your important data and then do the following

GSmartControl
Follow the instructions below to check your SMART status with GSmartControl:

  • Download the portable version of GSmartControl and save it on your Desktop;
  • Extract the zip file to your Desktop. Open the folder gsmartcontrol-1.1.3-win64 which should be located on your Desktop and double-click gsmartcontrol.exe to launch the program.
  • Identify your drive in the list (if recognized by the tool), and hover your mouse over it.
  • You should see something called: SMART status. It will either read: Enabled, in which case you should do the following:
  • Double-click on it to bring up its window (usually you'll find your drive by its size or its brand name);
  • Go to the Self-Tests tab, then select Extended Self-test in the Test type drop-down list and click on Execute (this test can take a few hours to complete);
  • Once the test is over, the results will be displayed at the bottom of the window. Please copy and paste these results in your next reply or take a screenshot;
  • Also, go in the Attributes tab and if you have any entries highlighted in red or pink, take a screenshot of the GSmartControl window and attach it in your next reply;
  • Please note: If the SMART Status reads: Unsupported, stop and let me know.

Hello, thanks for your help.
GSmartControl Extended Self-test result is "Completed without error". I'm not sure why it shows Lifetime hours of 27, because I have had this laptop for about 2 years.
The Attribute tab shows "never" failed for each ID.
Please let me know what I should do next.

Here's the CBS.log. Please note that after initiating shutdown, the computer was frozen at the "do not turn off" message. I had to force a power-down by holding down the power button.

I have left it on for over 12 hours before and it continued to display that message without doing anything. This time I left it on for about 20 minutes. The drive activity light stopped flashing about 2 minutes after the shutdown command. Other symptoms are: when I let the computer search for updates, more than 12 hours pass without it finding anything.

It exits with an error and it does not look like the CBS.log file is updated. I'm attaching the sfc screen and the CBS.log. Thanks.
