folks:

just a note to say W7E trial (evaluation copy) has no SAFE mode operation. This is a bug in the OS and not dependent on any driver installed. I have downloaded this OS from the MS web site, activated it, and determined that this software contains this mysterious bug. Upon partial completion of the password for the user, the OS will reset. Different CPU types (ie AMD or INTEL) may or may not display an error message.

has anybody experienced this? I will re track this thread if I am proved wrong and will certainly apologize to all.

thx for you input and expertise in this matter.

I have Windows 7 Enterprise trial which I downloaded from MS installed on a Virtual Machine. I fired up the VM i got the option for safemode it weyt through the stages of loading all the drivers then booted into the normal desktop. I tried useing Safemode with networking and same result. I also checked inside powershell to see if windows was listed as Safe-Boot or Normal-Boot and it returned as Normal Boot

The command i used was gwmi win32_computersystem | select BootupState. The possibleoutcomes are:

Code:
BootupState

    Data type: string
    Access type: Read-only

System is started. Fail-safe boot bypasses the user startup files—also called SafeBoot.

The following list contains the required values:

        "Normal boot"
        "Fail-safe boot"
        "Fail-safe with network boot"
Win32_ComputerSystem class (Windows)

John, I downloaded enterprise trial from Microsoft trial section and going into Previous trials:
Previous Versions

Yeah, it clearly is NOT a bug! Windows 7 has been out since 2009 and "bugs" like that have been ironed out long ago.

I would suspect (1) not an official Windows 7 or (2) incompatible hardware or (3) corrupt driver issues. While Safe Mode loads with limited driver support, drivers are still being loaded, even if just basic native drivers. And the hardware Safe Mode encounters must be supported by those drivers.

The fact the OS resets during password entry, that suggests to me advanced driver settings are causing the problems - or at least that is where I would look first.

Different CPU types (ie AMD or INTEL) may or may not display an error message.
How was this determined? I note to test this, this OS installation would have to be installed to two different motherboards - which of course, would require two different sets of motherboard drivers. Not to mention that raises some licensing issues.

hi again:

apparently its no longer available on the ms site. I have an account and no longer see it listed as an option for OS selection. It was available as an iso format and I downloaded the 64-bit version in Mar 2014

selecting the F8 key during boot allows windows to show the traditional "recovery" selections as part of troubleshooting drivers, previous installs, and access to the command prompt. If you select SAFE mode option you will be presented the "Log In" screen for the user. Input the user password and an immediate reset of the OS. Choosing SAFE mode w/ NETWORKING produces the same results. GOOGLE research states this is bug in the OS and has not been fixed (probably never will). Users testing/evaluating this 90-day OS w/ built-in key are expected to reinstall a "real/purchased copy" from MS so this issue becomes mute. I haven't tried MS W8 Enterprise trial version so maybe this bug has been fixed....who knows??

cheers and have a good day
