Hello mighty experts:

Google search has led me to this forum where I know some seemingly impossible corruptions have been successly resolved.
Dism and SFC /scannow both turn out clean (so does SFCfix), but when doing an in-place upgrade install, just before the system reboots I'm brought back to the desktop with a small window stating Windows setup has failed.
Attached is the CBS.log, kindly let me know if I need to produce additional ones. Thanks a million.

BTW here is the setuperr.log from the Panther folder which pertains to the failed upgrade install.
Also lots of missing subkeys from the Component Base Servicing key in the registry.

Hi and welcome to Sysnative,

It seems your Comonents Based Servicing hive is damaged beyond repair, do you have recent backups of this system?

Export CBS (Component Based Servicing) hive
  • Click on the Start button and type regedit
  • When you see regedit on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator.
  • When regedit opens, using the left pane, navigate to the following registry key and select it by clicking on it once.
    Code:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing
  • Once selected, click File > Export....
  • Change the Save as type: to Registry Hive Files (*.*).

  • Name this file ComponentBasedServicing (with no file extension) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Right-click on the saved file and choose Send > Compressed (zipped) Folder.
  • Attach the .ZIP file to your next post.
  • If the file is too large to upload here, upload the file to www.wetransfer.com and post the link in your next reply.

Hi Maxstar:

I truly appreciate your comment. Yes if I had known better, I would have made a backup of the system before I went ahead and experimented with the memory timings in the BIOS too agressively...
Thanks so much for your help, hopefully there's still a way to salvage this installation...

Hi,

Unfortunately, it is not possible to rebuild this hive since you don't have backups. So the only remaining solution is to reinstall this system.

You're welcome. And for the future you can use the following tool to create (periodic) backups of the registry. However it is always better to make complete system images when you try to tweak settings and/or overclocking your RAM.

Download

Acelogix RegBak (Portable) to create a backup of the registry.
  • Extract RegBak.zip and right-click regbak64.exe and select "Run as administrator".
  • Click on the button New backup and choose the location where you want to save the backup.
  • Optional: enter a description for this backup.
  • Now click on the option "Click here to view details".
  • Ensure the option Select hives not loaded by Windows is checked, to be sure the following items are included in the backup.

  • Click Ok to save these settings and press Start to create the backup.
  • When completed you will see the message: Finished succesfully.
