Hello,

System is Windows 10. This problem has been ongoing for many months, it's mainly an annoyance but it's about time I fixed it. Ever since a update way back when, I thought it was the "creators update" but now I'm all confused about that one because I hear that's coming this fall..anyway, not the main point...

Getting back to the main point, ever since that update Windows are constantly asked me to restart to finish updating, even though I'm pretty sure it has completed. I have checked the recently installed update and seems like everything is up to date.

My problem seems to be very similar to this one:
Windows Update keeps asking me to restart over and over again

Curiously as well, ever since when I boot up the computer before the login screen I get a blue screen that asked me which partition too boot, either Windows or Other. I have no other OS installed. Wouldn't mind getting rid of that screen/prompt as well.

Thanks!

Re: Windows always asking to restart and schedule restarts

Hi Cochy :)

Follow the instructions below.

iO3R662.png
Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST) - Fix mode
Follow the instructions below to execute a fix on your system using FRST, and provide the log in your next reply.
  • Download the right version of FRST for your system:
    • FRST 32-bit
    • FRST 64-bit
      Note: Only the right version will run on your system, the other will throw an error message. So if you don't know what your system's version is, simply download both of them, and the one that works is the one you should be using.
  • Move the executable (FRST.exe or FRST64.exe) on your Desktop
  • Download the attached fixlist.txt file, and save it on your Desktop (or wherever your FRST.exe/FRST64.exe executable is located)
  • Right-click on the FRST executable and select
    Spcusrh.png
    Run as Administrator (for Windows Vista, 7, 8, 8.1 and 10 users)
  • Click on the Fix button
    NYA5Cbr.png
  • On completion, a message will come up saying that the fix has been completed and it'll open a log in Notepad
  • Copy and paste its content in your next reply
View attachment fixlist.txt

Re: Windows always asking to restart and schedule restarts

Weird. The key doesn't exist, so technically, Windows shouldn't be asking you to restart over and over to install updates. It's still the case?

Yup! And we thought it would be an easy fix :(

Re: Windows always asking to restart and schedule restarts

Hey Aura,

Anything else we can try?

Re: Windows always asking to restart and schedule restarts

Sorry for the delay, apparently I missed your reply.

Can you run the same fix you ran the first time when you sent me a PM?

Re: Windows always asking to restart and schedule restarts

I can get as far as running the command line instruction to output the register values. Otherwise I cannot runt he fix you sent as the specific text file you attached is no longer available. Here's the registry output:

Re: Windows always asking to restart and schedule restarts

The RebootRequired key isn't there anymore, even though it was in the 1st log you sent me.

Alright, follow the instructions below.

EndqYRa.png
System File Checker (SFC)
Follow the instructions below to run a SFC scan on your system and to provide the CBS log in your next reply;
  • On Windows Vista & 7, click on the Windows Start Menu, then enter cmd in the search box, right-click on the cmd icon and select
    Spcusrh.png
    Run as Administrator
  • On Windows 8, drag your cursor in the bottom-left corner, and right-click on the metro menu preview, then select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • On Windows 8.1 and Windows 10, right click on the Windows logo in the bottom-left corner and select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • Enter the command below and press on Enter;
    Code:
    sfc /scannow
    Note: There's a space between "sfc" and "/scannow";
  • Once the scan is complete, enter the command below and press on Enter
    Code:
    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
  • A file called cbs.txt will have appeared on your Desktop. Upload the file on Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive and post the download URL for it here;
Note: Please note that the CBS.log is volatile, which means that if you don't upload it after the SFC scan is completed, it won't have the information from the scan anymore. So archive it and upload it as soon as you can.

Re: Windows always asking to restart and schedule restarts

SFC returned a clean log, which is good. Now let's see if DISM have something to say.

EndqYRa.png
DISM - Fixing Component Store Corruption
Follow the instructions below to run a DISM operation on your system.
  • On Windows 8, drag your cursor in the bottom-left corner, and right-click on the metro menu preview, then select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • On Windows 8.1 and Windows 10, right click on the Windows logo in the bottom-left corner and select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • Enter the command below and press on Enter;
    Code:
    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  • Let the scan run until the end (100%). Depending on your system, it can take some time;
  • Copy the C:\Windows\Logs\DISM folder and C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log file on your Desktop, then right-click on it, go to Send to... and select Compressed .zip archive;
  • Upload the file on Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive and post the download URL for it here;
Note: Please note that the CBS.log is volatile, which means that if you don't upload it after the DISM scan is completed, it won't contains the information from the scan anymore. So archive it and upload it as soon as you can.

Re: [Win10 x64] Always asking to restart and schedule restarts

Sorry for the delay.

I just noticed this part of your post:

Curiously as well, ever since when I boot up the computer before the login screen I get a blue screen that asked me which partition too boot, either Windows or Other. I have no other OS installed. Wouldn't mind getting rid of that screen/prompt as well.

Open a command prompt with Admin Rights, and enter this command:
Code:
bcdedit.exe /set {bootmgr} displaybootmenu no
It should get rid of that message.

And when you click on "Update and restart", does it actually install updates, or it just restarts normally?

Re: [Win10 x64] Always asking to restart and schedule restarts

Hi Aura,

I'm not 100% as I cannot restart just yet but I'm 99% sure it does nothing...no updates to install. Might just be a bugged out start menu? I'll double check later today.

Re: [Win10 x64] Always asking to restart and schedule restarts

Sorry for the delay. I keep missing your replies as I'm on hiatus here and I don't check the threads often.

It looks like a bugged Start Menu to me. The September updates should be out soon (if not today). I'm curious to see if after installing them, it'll "fix" the Start Menu.

Re: [Win10 x64] Always asking to restart and schedule restarts

Alright we'll see...so I guess it's really just a cosmetic annoyance. The boot menu as well doesn't go away. Enjoy your hiatus :)
