Hello,

I just did a fresh install of Windows 10 on an old laptop. Everything seems to be working fine, except for USB mice. I have tried several different ones and none of them work on any of the ports. I looked at Device Manager and attempted to update USB drivers but got an error, also the mice appeared as unknown devices. I attempted to manually installed the Microsoft generic USB mouse driver but I got hit with another error. Then I ran a "sfc /scannow" and it reports errors which it cannot fix (see attached txt had to upload to dropbox because the text was 13MB). I have also tried uninstalling the drivers that had the warning sign, restarting and reconnecting the mouse to no avail. Windows fails to install the driver when trying to update the USB controllers that shows up when connecting the mouse (see image).

Would appreciate any help I can get. The USB ports do recognize other devices as USB drives and my tablet.

Thank you,

Hello and welcome

Due to the precise nature of your corruption, you will receive help from a user named softwaremaniac. He's one of our senior trainees here who's in his final phase of his studies and needs to gain some real world experience in specific areas of Windows Update. This means that he'll be assisting you, but that I will first need to double check and approve his fixes before he posts them to you. If anything this is a good thing for you because it means that you've got at least two of us watching over your thread, but it will unfortunately add a slight delay between each reply. I hope that you understand and can accept the need for us to train up new members in this way in order to carry on doing what we do here, however, if for any reason you object to this setup, I will happily take on your thread myself.

Thank you very much for your understanding. We'll be with you very shortly.

Hello Brian,

That is great. I am okay with the slight delay.

Hello and welcome!

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put

tags around the log to break up the text.

SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt
  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

Re: Windows not recognizing mouse/SFC scannow can't fix errors

Thank you for the quick fix. "sfc /scannow" didn't find any corruptions. So far one out of the three USB ports recognizes the mouse. For the other ones the mouse shows up under "Other Devices" with an exclamation sign Capture.PNG.
