Hey guys!

I am a Windows Insider and tried/am trying to update from build 15063.138 to the latest Insider Build (namely: 16160, 16176, 16179) - but, as you might guess, without any success. "Configuring the update for Windows 10" only goes up to 35%, then the PC simply reboots back into the old build.
After googling for days and weeks now, I figured I can scan the PC for more details - as Windows Update does not give me any error code, but simply states that I should restart the PC in order to finish the update (which of course is silly and does not work) - via DISM. DISM [...] /ScanHealth and CheckHealth give me the message that the component store can be repaired. DISM [...] /RestoreHealth breaks at 98.4% with the error 0x800f081f Sources could not be found.
I googled for this error, followed all proposed solutions I could find, but none of them helped. (Here you can see some the steps I already tried.) As I do not want to perform a clean install for several times, mostly because I never give up hope, I googled on and on on...and found this thread where some really nice guy from the forum helped out and actually solved the issue!!!! So, I am hoping the same will happen here! :)

dism.log can be found here.

Pleeeassseee help me!!! I am completely lost! Thank you so so much for any helpful advice in advance! :)

OK, I need a different log to start with. Please do the following.

Step#1 - DISM /RestoreHealth Scan
Warning:this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Right-click on the Start button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
  2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter
    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  3. Once it finishes, copy and paste the following into the command-prompt window and press Enter. If prompted to overwrite the existing file go ahead.
    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
  4. Once this has completed please go to your Desktop and you will find CBS.txt => Please zip/upload to this thread.
Please Note:: if the file is too big (over 7MB) to upload to your next post, please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

Re: [Win10] DISM /RestoreHealth gives error 0x800f081f

OK. If you can explain exactly the sequence of events that happens it will be helpful.

1. You start the update....are you doing this from an ISO, USB?
2. Does the machine reboot only once before it fails or is it twice?
3. Any errors on the screen at all?

I know you've explained some of this in your initial post but would like as many details as you can provide.

Re: [Win10] DISM /RestoreHealth gives error 0x800f081f

I download the new Windows Insider build over the into the Settings app integrated Windows Update.

1) Check for update
2) It finds a new build
3) "Installation of updates is being prepared" runs from 0%
to 100% without a problem. What I don't quite understand is why this step happens before any update is being downloaded. (translated from German)
4) "Updates are downloaded" runs from 0%
to 100% without a problem. (translated from German)
5) "Installation of updates is being prepared " runs from 0%
to 100% without a problem. (translated from German)
6) I click on the "Restart now" button because newly downloaded build is installation-ready (allegedly)
7) Computer closes every still opened app (if any)
8) Shut down/restart procedure initiated with text saying "Computer is being restarted" on blue background
9) Text "Update for Windows 10 is being configured. XX% Complete. Please do not shut down your computer." appears in blue background. Runs from 0% to 35%.
10) Text "Computer is being restarted" appears again on blue background.
11) Computer simply restarts and boots back into old build.
11) Only "error message" I get after signing in again is "The installation of some updates couldn't be completed."

Re: [Win10] DISM /RestoreHealth gives error 0x800f081f

I have a couple ideas. Please start with the following.

FRST Fix
NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system
1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
2. Download attached file and save it to the Desktop.
Note. It's important that both files, FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work (in this case...the desktop).
3. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
4. Press the Fix button just once and wait. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
5. When finished FRST64 will generate a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please post the contents of it in your reply.

Rename FRST64.exe to ENGLISHFRST64.exe and run it and try the Fix button.

Can you check for any of the following logs again and zip/attach them?

C:\$Windows.~BT\sources\panther\setupapi\setupapi.dev.log

I could offer hooking up via TeamViewer, if you please?! :)

I mean, if you want to, I would gladly give you access to my computer via TeamViewer. So you could search around try to fix it with direct access. Nevertheless, we can of course also further try to solve with you instructing me via this platform.
