Hi, I was directed to your service by Corrine of Landzdown forums. I've just worked through your series of steps before posting, and I have to say that FSC fix tool was pretty scary with all those warnings. Since I trust Corrine, I held my breath and let it do its thing, and thankfully nothing blew up. :)

I've been having Windows update issues since the start of summer. The July updates did not install and after running the troubleshooter, some of them installed, but not the cumulative update. The August updates installed without incident, and in Sept, the computer was shut down when the updates were distributed. They have been trying to install since rebooting the PC on the 21st. They download fine, but fail on the install. I ran the update troubleshooting tool again, and it fixes the same problems each time except for one:

Windows could not automatically detect this network's proxy settings -!
Service registration is missing or corrupt FIXED
Potential Windows Update Database error detected - FIXED
Windows Update components must be repaired: FIXED
Check for pending updates: fixed.
updatetroubleshooter9-24-2017.png

I did check my proxy settings and I think they are set up correctly. However, I can't click the save button as I was instructed to do in my Landzdown thread, as it is grayed out.

The history of things I have tried is in this topic at Landzdown:
Windows 10 problem with getting updates

This is the most recent error message when I tried to update after running the troubleshooter:

One more piece of information: I tried to run the update again after the SFCFix and no change:

Hello and welcome

Due to the precise nature of your issue, you will receive help from a user named softwaremaniac. He's one of our senior trainees here who's in his final phase of his studies and needs to gain some real world experience in specific areas of Windows Update. This means that he'll be assisting you, but that I will first need to double check and approve his fixes before he posts them to you. If anything this is a good thing for you because it means that you've got at least two of us watching over your thread, but it will unfortunately add a slight delay between each reply. I hope that you understand and can accept the need for us to train up new members in this way in order to carry on doing what we do here, however, if for any reason you object to this setup, I will happily take on your thread myself.

Thank you very much for your understanding. We'll be with you very shortly.

Hello and welcome to Sysnative!

Please download the attached file, right-click it and select Run as Administrator.
Wait a couple of seconds. A CMD window will open.
When done, retry updates.

Note: It will take longer than usual.

Re: [Win10 Pro x64x] Windows Sept-17 Update KB4038788 failed. Error 0x80070002

Thank you softwaremaniac and BrianDrab for working on my problem!

I downloaded and ran as administrator the attached .bat file in your post as directed.

It stopped update services, worked a while and then gave this message and closed:

Access denied. Windows update service is starting.

Just in case this was supposed to happen, I retried the update. It did take much longer to process, as you mentioned. The progress bar on installing made it about halfway and then failed. This is error message:

• 2017-09 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1703 for x64-based Systems (KB4038788) - Error 0x80070002

In the history, it lists the attempt as failed to install.

Re: [Win10 Pro x64x] Windows Sept-17 Update KB4038788 failed. Error 0x80070002

Thanks. Please attempt the following and let me know the results.

Remove Update Manually
1. Right-click on the Start button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter
wusa /uninstall /KB:3089227

3. Let me know if it says it was successful or if there are any errors.

Re: [Win10 Pro x64x] Windows Sept-17 Update KB4038788 failed. Error 0x80070002

I did not have the option when right-clicking start button (windows icon?) to select select Command Prompt (Admin). I typed "command prompt" in the search box to bring up the black box. I also did not get the prompt to allow changes to the computer like I normally do. Did I miss something?

It was not successful.
Windows Update Standalone Installer:
The update KB3089227 is not installed on this computer.

It seems to be endlessly still searching for updates, but closed when I clicked the OK button on the error message.

Re: [Win10 Pro x64x] Windows Sept-17 Update KB4038788 failed. Error 0x80070002

Corrine gave me the correct sequence, and I right-clicked on the Command Prompt app that came up from the search window this time and choose "run as administrator".

However the result was the same, and with the same error message. Only it happened faster.
Windows Update Standalone Installer:
The update KB3089227 is not installed on this computer.

FRST Registry Search
1. Click your Start button and choose Control Panel.
2. In the upper right corner ensure the View by: is set to Category.
3. Select the Programs group.
4. Click the Turn Windows features on or off link. This will bring up the Windows Features dialog. Wait until this dialog populates with information.
Note: This loads your components hive which is what we want. Please keep this dialog open while you perform the remaining steps.
5. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
6. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
7. Copy and paste KB3089227 into the Search box and click the Search Registry button.

8. When the scan is complete a notepad window will open with the results. Please copy and paste the contents in your next reply. If for some reason notepad doesn't open the file should be
saved on your desktop named Search.txt.
9. You may close any remaining open windows now.

Windows Features dialogue was open on the desktop during the scan.
File that appeared was named SearchReg.txt

I am a bit confused.

If I understand the linked clean reboot instructions correctly, I should:

1. Do steps 1-7 of the clean reboot process which ends with restarting the computer.
2. When the computer finishes restarting, I then download the Reset_Windows_Update_History.bat ) file and run it as Administrator
3. Retry to install the failed windows update

Here is where it gets fuzzy to me. I assume that if the update fails to install, I would then proceed to the Reset Computer instructions. However, if the update successfully installs, it usually says a restart is required to finish installing the updates. Do I restart the computer right then? Or do I proceed to the instructions of 7 steps to reset the computer?

Also, the order: Can I download the .bat file before I start the clean reboot, or does it have to happen after that is accomplished? I don't know what my desktop will look like after the clean reboot, or if I will be able to find the download link to get it.

My computer is part of a home network, and I notice there is a warning about that. If I get stuck in the clean reboot process, how would I get out of it?

First you download the .bat file, then you follow the clean boot instructions.
Only after you have successfully booted into a Clean Boot state should you run the previously downloaded .bat file as administrator.
When that completes, please attempt the updates again, and provide CBS.log if any fail.
In your next reply, I want to know:

1. Did the .bat file return any errors?
2. Did the machine update successfully after executing the .bat file?

Did the clean reboot. Steps proceeded as outlined.

Ran the .bat file. Result was that it deleted some kind of log file, but it only flashed for a second or two and I couldn't get the details. No report appeared afterward.

I retried the updates. It offered a new one, and then the KB4038788 one. It downloaded successfully, but failed to install.
Error code: • 2017-09 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1703 for x64-based Systems (KB4038788) - Error 0x80070002
I looked in the update history, and this fail appeared, but not the other update that was offered, so I don't have a record of what it was.

Now I have a problem. I started the sequence to reset the coputer to start normally, The System Configuration > Services tab checkbox was already cleared, and the Enable button was grayed out. Ticking and unticking the box had no effect on it. I went ahead and enabled all the startup problems in Task Manager, but now I don't know what to do. Is it safe to restart without being able to use the Enable button? I see MalwareBytes has been stopped in the list, although other programs are listed as running. It looks to be about half and half.

I havent hit the OK button yet that would intiate the restart sequence. What do I do next?

Attaching new CBS files in case that helps.

Please, I'm getting worried. Windows Defender is running even though MB and other services are not. Is it safe for me to access the internet from this machine while I'm waiting for help on this restarting issue? Or should I try to monitor this thread from another device?

One thing I see is that if I click the grayed out Enable button, the OK button becomes highlighted with an outline. Does that mean I can go ahead and finish the reset for starting normally?

Please, don't worry, I've got everything under control. If at any point you do not know how to do something or are unsure if you understood my instructions correctly, please stop and ask. I'll do my best to assist you.

Please follow the instructions below:

1. Download the Media Creation Tool to your desktop. Go ahead and run this. Note: Click the Download tool now button when you are at this link.
2. Accept the license agreement
3. Keep the default which is to Upgrade your PC and click Next.
4. Go ahead and run this through and let me know when complete.

Doing it this way will keep all your data and programs intact. As always though, make sure you have a backup of any critical data in case something unexpected happens.

I tried to download the tool but the download failed. :(

MediaCreationTool.exe

I tried again and was successful in downloading this time.

My question is: before I run the tool, should I close the system configuration (services) and Task Manager (startup) screens that I still have open waiting to complete the "start normally after clean reboot" sequence?
