Hello,

I can't upgrade my HP8540w notebook from Win 10 pro 64bit past version 1607.

Originally the notebook was on Win 7 pro 64 bit, the upgrades to Win 10 version 1511 and 1607 worked without errors via WU. Same with the monthly cumulative updates, latest version now is build 14393.1770.
Update to 1703 or 1709 with WU fails.

If I try to do an inplace repair (1607) or update (1703/1709) with an ISO mounted as a virtual drive or on a bootable USB stick (made with rufus) I always get the same error.
First of all the I am not asked to keep the personal files and apps by the setup. If I ignore this the setup is stopped after "Making sure you're ready to install" with the error message "Something Happened – We Couldn’t Tell if Your PC is Ready to Continue Installing Windows 10. Try Restarting Setup."

What I tried so far:

- updated BIOS and drivers to their latest version

- did a full virus scan with Avira Antivirus and Windows Defender - nothing found

- after that I uninstalled Avira Antivirus (Windows uninstall + manufacturer tool, also in safe mode) and SuperAntiSpyware (windows uninstall), although they had never been a problem upgrading from Win7 to Win10 version 1511 and Win10 version 1607. Also run ESET AV remover, so everything should have been removed.

- reset WU

- checkdisk /f

- sfc /scannow
- Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
- Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
- dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
all without problems

- SFCfix
SFCFix version 3.0.0.0 by niemiro.

- I made an image of the hd with Macrium reflect, removed all partitions, did a fresh clean install of Win 10 Pro 64bit 1709 (which was working fine - graphics, sound, touchpad, etc.) to get a new system partition and restored the partition containing c: from the backup. No problem booting, no problems with my old 1607, but still no upgrade to 1703/1709.

- from the recovery console:
bootrec /fixmbr ok
bootrec /fixboot access denied (!) (same as after the clean install - where is this blocked?)

The attached logfiles are made after all these unseccessful attempts.

Any helpful ideas are welcome. Thank you.

Hi and welcome to Sysnative. Sorry for the delay. Are you still in need of assistance?

Hello Brian,

thanks for your reply.
I couldn't solve the problem yet so help is still welcome.

OK, let's give it a go. I apologize if you already tried these things but I need to find out. Just answer the questions...don't try the install yet. We'll try to come up with a plan.

1. Do you have SecureBoot enabled in the BIOS? If so can have you disabled it and try the update with the ISO?
2. Have you tried, disabling your wireless NIC, wired NIC, and disconnecting all peripherals from your machine that weren't absolutely necessary to type or use a mouse?
3. Do you have IIS installed on your machine?
4. Did you relocate your user profiles so they point to another drive besides the C:\ drive?
5. While attempting the upgrade, did your machine reboot at all before getting the failure message? If so...how many times?

Thanks.

Re: [WIN10 Pro x64] Can't update past 1607

Hello Brian,

thanks for your reply.

1. Do you have SecureBoot enabled in the BIOS? If so can have you disabled it and try the update with the ISO?

UEFI has never been activated since I am coming from WIN 7. So I think there should be no SecureBoot.

2. Have you tried, disabling your wireless NIC, wired NIC, and disconnecting all peripherals from your machine that weren't absolutely necessary to type or use a mouse?

Yes. I removed all external hardware (which is only a USB card reader as the built in one is faulty and therefore deactivated). I deactivated all internal extras like wired NIC, wireless NICcamera, fingerprint reader etc in the BIOS. And I disabled the NICs in Windows. Same error.

3. Do you have IIS installed on your machine?

No. But what I am running from time to time ist a XAMPP installation for my Joomla test enviroment - but for the updates it was not started.

4. Did you relocate your user profiles so they point to another drive besides the C:\ drive?

I never had any HD drives apart the one containing C:/ so the user profiles have always been there.
There were two additional partitions by HP on the original disk which had drive letters for some time. But they are gone (of course) when I cleared the disk, did a clean install (with MBR) from a bootable USB stick and restored C: from an image made before. Unfortunately that didn't solve the update problem.

5. While attempting the upgrade, did your machine reboot at all before getting the failure message? If so...how many times?

The failure message appeared before any rebboting.
I think the problem starts earlier when I should be asked by the setup programm which files I want to keep. This dialogue is missing (or it pops up for a very short moment only so that I can't see is), the setup program simply continues.
Is it possible that the setup program doesn't recognise the Windows already installed, although being executed under build 1607?

Re: [WIN10 Pro x64] Can't update past 1607

Let's see if we can find out. Please do the following.

Step#1 - Capture Process Monitor Trace
1. Download and run Process Monitor. Leave this running while you perform the next steps.
2. Attempt the Windows 10 Upgrade.
3. Stop Process Monitor as soon as the update fails. You can simply do this by clicking the magnifying glass on the toolbar as shown below.

4. Select the File menu...Save... and save the file to your desktop. This is likely the default location. The name (unless changed) will be LogFile.PML. This is fine.
5. Zip up and attach the LogFile.PML file as well as your CBS.log.

Re: [WIN10 Pro x64] Can't update past 1607

Awesome. I need some logs.

1. Zip up your entire c:\windows\logs\cbs folder and upload.
2. C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther\setupact.log
3. C:\Windows\Logs\DISM\dism.log
4. C:\Windows\Logs\MoSetup\BlueBox.log

Re: [WIN10 Pro x64] Can't update past 1607

Please do the following.

Step#1 - SFCFix Script
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.
  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop. If you still have this on your desktop from downloading previously, you don't need to re-download.
  2. Download the file below, SFCScript.txt, and save this to your Desktop.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCScript.txt.
  5. Drag the file SFCScript.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please

Re: [WIN10 Pro x64] Can't update past 1607

OK, attempt the upgrade again and if it fails I only need the following two logs.
Code:
C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther\setupact.log
C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther\setuperr.log
