Hello,
I can't upgrade my HP8540w notebook from Win 10 pro 64bit past version 1607.
Originally the notebook was on Win 7 pro 64 bit, the upgrades to Win 10 version 1511 and 1607 worked without errors via WU. Same with the monthly cumulative updates, latest version now is build 14393.1770.
Update to 1703 or 1709 with WU fails.
If I try to do an inplace repair (1607) or update (1703/1709) with an ISO mounted as a virtual drive or on a bootable USB stick (made with rufus) I always get the same error.
First of all the I am not asked to keep the personal files and apps by the setup. If I ignore this the setup is stopped after "Making sure you're ready to install" with the error message "Something Happened – We Couldn’t Tell if Your PC is Ready to Continue Installing Windows 10. Try Restarting Setup."
What I tried so far:
- updated BIOS and drivers to their latest version
- did a full virus scan with Avira Antivirus and Windows Defender - nothing found
- after that I uninstalled Avira Antivirus (Windows uninstall + manufacturer tool, also in safe mode) and SuperAntiSpyware (windows uninstall), although they had never been a problem upgrading from Win7 to Win10 version 1511 and Win10 version 1607. Also run ESET AV remover, so everything should have been removed.
- reset WU
- checkdisk /f
- sfc /scannow
- Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
- Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
- dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
all without problems
- SFCfix

- I made an image of the hd with Macrium reflect, removed all partitions, did a fresh clean install of Win 10 Pro 64bit 1709 (which was working fine - graphics, sound, touchpad, etc.) to get a new system partition and restored the partition containing c: from the backup. No problem booting, no problems with my old 1607, but still no upgrade to 1703/1709.
- from the recovery console:
bootrec /fixmbr ok
bootrec /fixboot access denied (!) (same as after the clean install - where is this blocked?)
The attached logfiles are made after all these unseccessful attempts.
Any helpful ideas are welcome. Thank you.
