Gentlemen,

I had excellent experiences with your assistance approx. 4 years ago with a SONY Vaio notebook, which I just upgraded to a DELL XPS13. Without your help, it would have been impossible to resolve my problems with the SONY.

I need your help this time around, as well, much to my surprise, as I bought the #1 rated Ultrabook with just about the full spec.

All of my software was freshly installed and all the data was transferred to the DELL via a USB flash drive.

I've had 14 BSOD's in the past two days, primarily while transferring data to the new unit. Please see the attached files, as you recommended, and hopefully you will be able to detect what the problem(s) may be.

I am under the gun with this as I will be traveling to Africa on a business trip in 2 weeks, and I can't take the SONY, as it is too unstable, and I can't afford the DELL to fail.

The following are the questions you asked:

· OS - Windows 10, 8.1, 8, 7, Vista ? Windows 10 Pro
· x86 (32-bit) or x64 ? x64
· What was original installed OS on system? The same one that is in the system now
· Is the OS an OEM version (came pre-installed on system) or full retail version (YOU purchased it from retailer)? Came installed on the system
· Age of system (hardware) I've had it for 4 days and it seems to have been assembled in January 2017, although reconfired per my order
· Age of OS installation - have you re-installed the OS? Not sure when installed, but it is the original installation.

· CPU Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-7560U CPU @ 2.40GHz, 2401 Mhz, 2 Core(s), 4 Logical Processor(s)
· Video Card Intel(R) Iris(TM) Plus Graphics 640
· MotherBoard - (if NOT a laptop) Laptop
· Power Supply - brand & wattage (if laptop, skip this one) Laptop

· System Manufacturer DELL
· Exact model number (if laptop, check label on bottom
XPS13 MLK (9360)
· Laptop or Desktop? Laptop

As always, your help is greatly appreciated. Please let me know of other information I should send you.

Thanks.

Re: BSOD's in Brand New DELL XPS 13 Notebook

All of my software was freshly installed and all the data was transferred to the DELL via a USB flash drive.
Running the dumps now.

What exactly are you copying to the new Dell?

All programs must be installed on the Dell; nothing can be copied over.

Re: BSOD's in Brand New DELL XPS 13 Notebook

Hi. . .

Can you take the system back & exchange it?

You've had at least 14 BSODs during the last 2 days; Windows was installed (initial boot on a new system) on 4/28 @ 20:00 hours EDT -- less than 3 days ago.

You have numerous bugcheck codes -
Code:
[font=lucida console]
BugCheck 3B, {c0000005, fffff802b86419f2, ffffe081599bebc0, 0}
BugCheck A, {2, 2, 0, fffff803c9c34758}
BugCheck 133, {0, 501, 500, 0}
BugCheck D1, {220, 2, 0, fffff802568efca8}
BugCheck A, {ffffffffffffff8d, ff, a9, fffff8016f2787c2}
BugCheck 7F, {8, ffffa98059f88a30, 2, fffff80261169e71}
BugCheck 139, {4, ffffc481b1066720, ffffc481b1066678, 0}
BugCheck A, {1000000af, 2, 0, fffff80012eaf837}
BugCheck 3D, {fffff8001c421cb8, fffff8001c4214e0, 0, 0}
BugCheck A, {ffffdb00f531d4bd, ff, 57, fffff8016eca3641}
BugCheck 7F, {8, ffffc980641b4a30, 1, fffff8029867f636}
BugCheck 3B, {c0000096, fffff800c0e5248b, ffff870158568e70, 0}
BugCheck A, {1a639, ff, 0, fffff8025e8ac62f}
BugCheck 3B, {c000001d, ffff85cd6eaf5260, ffffd80111df5190, 0}
[/font]

That means unknown hardware failure. One of the dumps even spelled it out:
Probably caused by : hardware ( nt!KiCheckForTimerExpiration+51 )

Not one single BSOD named a 3rd party driver.

You may want to run Driver Verifier for further confirmation that a 3rd party driver is not at fault - https://www.sysnative.com/forums/bs...er-bsod-related-windows-10-8-1-8-7-vista.html

Sorry that I could not be more helpful on this one, but unfortunately, the dumps are incapable of telling us which piece of hardware has failed. Dumps are only good for figuring out software problems.

Re: BSOD's in Brand New DELL XPS 13 Notebook

Yes, I can return the unit within 30 days, and have protection plans in place; but it's always painful with the amount of time it takes to copy all the data and especially the reinstalling of so much software. I will run the driver verifier for further confirmation about the 3rd party driver.

Without spending an inordinate amount of time trying to solve potential problems to avoid the return, I would like to try what is possible before resorting to the return.

Hi Amcgrap (and Jcgriff2). :wave:

Try to remove x1 and MBAM, then see if the BSODs will continue.
Is secure boot enabled in the BIOS settings? Someone (seeing internet) had problems with it and your Toshiba NVMe SSD 512GB (THNSN5512GPUK).
I saw a lot of errors about storport and raid (in Jcgriff's posts and in MSINFO).
Did you already check for updates on your manufacturer support website (click)? Check the correctness of the model, I do mistakes!
As an example, I can see Toshiba XG4 non-SED Solid State Drive Firmware Update in that list: I'm not sure if it is correct for your SSD.
Another one: Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver and Management Console.

Thank you very much for your response. I will attempt each one of your suggestions in the morning and revert. The BSOD's have not occurred again in the past day, but I also haven't been copying large amounts of data to the drive, as I did the first 2 days I had the system. I also have been letting it run continuously without any heavy use.

Thanks again, as my hopes really are to keep the system, as long as we can correct whichever of the potential problem(s) are causing the BSOD's. Will respond tomorrow.

Thanks very much again.

Dear Xilolee,

As luck would have it, just a few minutes after I sent you my previous message, I had 2 BSOD's within 10 minutes. I have attached the dump files. In light of not creating more work than necessary, if you could take a look at these 2 most recent BSOD's, I would appreciate it greatly.

As soon as I get a break here at work, I will go through all the steps you suggested yesterday and revert.

I have thought about alerting DELL about these problems, but I am not sure of what kind of technician would take the case to assess whether to exchange the unit, or not. I have also had terrific experiences with your group, well over and above any experiences I've had with manufacturer's technicians. The only updside I can see to consulting with them would be that they may have experienced the same scenarios with other owners of the same unit.

However, I would like to exhaust what I can with Sysnative prior to going to them as a last resort.

Thanks again for your patience and insight. I will run the sequences you suggested soon, and please let me know if the last 2 BSOD's blare out something new.

Your ram speed should be 1866 according to "Intel® Core™ i7-7560U Processor" webpage: "DDR4-2133, LPDDR3-1866, DDR3L-1600".
Instead the RamInfo.html report and WinDbg show: Speed 2133MHz.
Enter in bios settings and see if an option to lower it to 1866 MHz (or from 1066 to 933?) exists.

RAM model found with WinDbg: MT52L1G32D4PG-093 (2 slot and 2 sticks).
If that information isn't correct, more information about your ram is welcome.

In getting into the BIOS settings, I don't see where I have the opportunity to change the memory speed. It does show 2133MHz and I also see where in the sales specs, it does mention the LPDDR3-1866MHz Memory. Could this actually be the cause for some / all of these problems?

I ran another scan as to the memory and there are 2 8GB modules soldered onto the motherboard.

I'm not sure and I'm not an expert, but if intel says i7-7560U supports LPDDR3-1866, I don't think they'll say it so by chance...
It seems like DELL set them at 2133MHz seeing the speed of ddr4, while in reality those modules seem to be LPDDR3 instead.
Did you check if you can modify the RAM speed using the DELL software installed on your laptop?

I agree with you. I will contact them now and discuss just that. All my sales receipts, etc. say the same thing, yet the BIOS is reading 2133 MHz of memory speed. Will let you know as soon as I speak with them. That was a very good pickup on your part.

Thanks.

You're right as I didn't see your previous message before I sent mine. I left a message for our DELL account executive to be directed to the right DELL group to discuss this memory issue. In your experience, can this memory discrepancy be the culprit behind most of the BSOD's?

Thanks Xilolee. I spent some time talking with the DELL support team on Friday, and after they assessed the situation, they decided to replace my unit. I am not 100% satisfied, as I always want to understand why things happened, as well as avoiding a repeat situation. According to them, the over-under clocking scenario could be the culprit (processor / memory are the problem). I updated all drivers and also the BIOS yesterday and so far, the present unit is behaving well, but I have not run it very hard. I think I should just take the exchange, but have to deal with re-installation of programs and copying of data. Anyhow, any advice when re-installing would be appreciated. I think the first step would be to run tests on the new unit, as well as diagnostics to identify the exact configuration, prior to installing anything.

I have attached the spec of the replacement unit which will hopefully be on the way soonest.

Thanks, as always.

Yes, in my very little experience with BSODs; an example: random bsod, need help on figuring out whats happening. (click).

I.e., will they replace it with the same model?
I/we can't check things on the paper: as you saw, I identified the speed (or frequency?) of the ram almost by chance...

Yes, it is supposed to be the same unit, and in the event that it is any different, th spec exceeds the present one. I am sure that is the case, as this is not an inexpensive unit. I will check upon receipt and make sure of the spec, BIOS, settings, etc. In the meantime, unless you have another recommendation, I will probably follow the same installation procedures I used previously.

Thanks for your help and will keep you posted. By the way, the present unit has no BSOD's for the past 2 days and running real smoothly. It's like when you go to the doctor and pains all go away before you get there?

Thanks again.
