[Win10] Yet Another 0x800f081f Problem

Did disk cleanup to remove old CBS & DISM logs.

Ran sfc /scannow . As always, it hangs at 26%.

Ran SFCFix.exe, which went to DISM. Stops at 98.5%, giving as always Error: 0x800f081f. The source files could not be found...

Have mounted the latest Win 10 iso several times & with DISM pointed to install. wim, but it never finds it.

Have fiddled with gpedit.msc (Specify settings for optional component installation & component repair setting), but must be doing something wrong.

Windows Update works perfectly fine & is up-to-date.

Read somewhere that it might be a .NET Framework 3.5 problem, but that seems to be O.K.

Did I also read somewhere that it might be a graphics problem? It's NIVIDIA GeForce GTX 960, which is also up-to-date.

Everything else is working just fine; no problems otherwise.

It's just annoying not being able to run SFC or DISM, & don't particularly want trouble with these further down the track when I really need them.

Obviously would much appreciate any help in solving this annoying problem or maybe problems.

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put [CODE][/CODE] tags around the log to break up the text.

View attachment SFCFix.zip

Step 2 - SFC Scan

  1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Search.
    (If you're using a mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer down, and then click Search.)
  2. Type cmd in the search box, and then right-click or press and hold on Command Prompt.
  3. Tap or click Run as administrator.
  4. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

    Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt
  5. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

Thanks, zcomputerwiz, for your reply.

Unfortunately, sfc /scannow still hangs at 26%: "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation."

I've attached both the resultant cbs.txt & SFC.txt for your perusal.

Let's check with DISM instead.

DISM /RestoreHealth Scan

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Right-click on the Start
    w8start.png
    button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
  2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter

    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

    Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt

  3. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please zip and attach this to your next post.

If the zip file is larger than 8MB, please use a file sharing service such as OneDrive, DropBox, SendSpace, etc. and include the link with your reply.

Re: Yet Another 0x800f081f Problem

Thanks, zcomputerwiz.

Dism still of course hangs at 98.5%. Still the Error: 0x800f081f.

Attached the requested cbs.txt.

Re: Yet Another 0x800f081f Problem

See if you can uninstall KB3216755. If that completes successfully, please run DISM again and then zip and attach CBS.log

Re: Yet Another 0x800f081f Problem

Thanks, zcomputerwiz.

Tried to uninstall KB3216755, but that was unsuccessful.

Windows Update:

An error has occurred. Not all of the updates were successfully uninstalled.

KB3216755 is still listed in: Uninstall an update.

Repeated this process, plus a restart.

Ran Dism ... /RestoreHealth anyway.

Yet again it hangs at 98.5%, with the Error: 0x800f081f.

The latest cbs.txt is attached.

I noticed that the Total Detected Corruption has increased from the previous (yesterday) 19 to the current (today) 32.

The attempted uninstall?

Re: Yet Another 0x800f081f Problem

I'd like to check your disk's SMART stats before we continue.

GSmartControl
Follow the instructions below to test your hard drive health with GSmartControl:

  • Download GSmartControl and save it on your Desktop;
  • Extract the content of the GSmartControl .zip archive and execute gsmartcontrol.exe; To extract you can right-click your mouse on the GSmartControl.zip file and select Extract.
  • Identify your drive in the list, and double-click on it to bring up it's window (usually you'll find your drive by it's size or it's brand name);
  • Go in the Perform Tests tab, then select Extended Self-test in the Test type drop-down list and click on Execute (this test can take a few hours to complete);
  • Once the test is over, the results will be displayed at the bottom of the window. Please copy and paste these results in your next reply;
  • Also, go in the Attributes tab and if you have any entries highlighted in red or pink, copy and paste their name in your next reply (or take a screenshot of the GSmartControl window and attach it in your next reply);

Re: Yet Another 0x800f081f Problem

Thanks, zcomputerwiz.

GSmartControl reports nothing amiss.

The Samsung 1TB SSD is fairly new.

My memory is that I've previously run both SFC & DISM successfully on it.

Basic Health Check: Passed.

Short Self-test: Completed without error.

Extended Self-test [took forever]: Completed without error.

Attributes: Nothing in red or pink.

I've attached the actual results of the Extended Self-test & Attributes [the latter as .gif should you want it].

Re: Yet Another 0x800f081f Problem

At this point it may be quickest to perform an in-place upgrade.

You can get the Media Creation Tool here: Download Windows 10
This requires an empty 8GB USB flash drive.

Once the installation media has been created, run setup. Be sure to select the option to keep personal files and apps.
If asked to check for updates, choose 'not right now'.

Re: Yet Another 0x800f081f Problem

Thanks, zcomputerwiz.

The Gordian Knot solution.

May wait for Redstone 3 and see what happens.

Unless of course nothing untoward happens in the meantime.
