[SOLVED] Win10: Windows Update seems ok but sfc and dism failing

I've been trying to diagnose some odd behavior on this Windows 10 machine that very recently upgraded from Win 7 to Win 10, such as when I try to open "Add or remove programs" the settings window will open blank and hang as "not responding" (sometimes for up to 30 seconds) before just closing without any errors.

Although Windows Update appears to be running fine, I am seeing the following errors when I try to run either sfc /scannow or dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth.

SFCFix Fix​
This fix is very specific for calanan's computer. For everyone else, trying this fix on your own computer might damage your computer. If you are after assistance, create a new thread, and you will be assisted shortly.

Download SFCFix (by niemiro) and move the executable on your Desktop
Download the attached View attachment SFCFix Script.txt and move the archive to your Desktop
Note: Make sure that the file is named SFCFix Script.txt, do not rename it.
Save any work you have open, and close every programs
Drag the SFCFix Script.txt archive file over the SFCFix.exe executable and release it

Thanks! We figured out why SFC and DISM were not working. Here is the fix that should allow you to run them:

1. Right-click on the Start

button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter

Hello calanan! I think we found the issue here, but to be able to fix it, we need the Components Hive:


Retrieve Components Hive
 1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to SendSpace and just provide the link here.

It appears that your COMPONENTS hive is corrupt beyond repair.

We need to do a repair install of Windows 10 using the Media Creation Tool:

Please download Media Creation Tool
Run the tool
Choose Upgrade This PC
Click Next
Follow the instructions

When it asks you about keeping your files, Make sure to choose to keep everything

If you have any questions, let us know!

This will fix Component Store corruption

Ugh, ok thanks. Will this work similarly to a first-time upgrade or even a refresh in that any desktop apps will be removed?
 
It will work like an in-place upgrade, so basically it keeps your files and programs and upgrades Windows to Windows 10

Thanks, one last question: For this PC running Win 10 Home (Version 10.0.10240 Build 10240) I should use the "Upgrade now" button that downloads the file "GetWindows10-sds_____________.exe" rather than downloading MediaCreationTool.exe and running it directly?

Just want to be certain before pulling the trigger, thanks!

Download the MediaCreationTool.exe

The GetWindows10-sds is for 7/8.1 (although they can also install using MediaCreationTool)
