I have been trying to solve the following windows update problem for about a month and am hoping somebody here may be able to shed some light on it.

Each time WU runs on my Dell XPS 15 9550 I receive the following error: "Intel - Other hardware - Intel(R) Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework Manager - Error 0x800f0203", and my windows update history has dozens of the same error. I installed the latest driver (8.1.10605.221,A02) from the Dell 9550 driver site a few months ago (Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework Driver Driver Details | Dell US), and WU didn't start bugging me about this until a month or so later. I've also run the Intel Driver Update Utility (Download Intel(R) Driver Update Utility), which indicates that there isn't a newer driver available. The only update that Intel indicates is available is the Intel Chipset Device software, but it warns against installing non-Dell customized drivers. It also says that my current installed version is 14.5.2.1088, whereas the new version is 10.1.1.14. I'm not sure how the latest version on Intel's website is so many revisions behind my installed version, so I've never pulled the trigger on that one.

I have "hidden" this update so it doesn't bug me anymore, but the following error still persists. In device manager, the "Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework" parent shows two functioning instances:

  • "Intel(R) Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework Memory Participant"
  • "Intel(R) Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework Manager"

Where both have driver version of **8.1.10605.221**.
The remainder of the entries under the parent (6) are titled:

  • "Intel(R) Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework Generic Participant"


and they are all in error, showing the following status: "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)". I am attaching a screenshot at the end of the message.


Does anybody know what could be causing this? I'm sure this isn't the right place to post a question, so please let me know if I should move it. Any advice would be appreciated!

Have you tried
  1. uninstalling the drivers through device manager (delete driver software when prompted)?
  2. After removing the drivers, scan for hardware changes through device manager.
  3. Let Windows install the driver it deems appropriate if it can.
  4. If Windows does not find a compatible driver, try installing it clean from Intel first, or from Dell if the Intel driver complains about your system being an OEM system.
 
I have tried the steps that you outlined, however I'm still having problems. After removing all current drivers & scanning for hardware changes, the items under the "Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework" parent are no longer showing an error, however there is now an "Unknown Device" in device manager (see screenshots below).

When attempting to use Windows Update to install the driver, I receive an error that says "There is no driver selected for the device information set or element" as seen below:

When attempting to perform a "clean" install of the driver directly from Intel, I receive a generic error as seen below:

Since I have yet to resolve this problem, am I running the risk of damaging my system due to overheating or something similar? I ask because this has been a thorn in my side, however I haven't noticed any negative affects (so far). Any help anybody could provide would be appreciated!
 
You are not likely at risk for overheating. Thermal sensors interface with the BIOS as well as Windows, and if the system overheats, the system turns off to protect itself. You can monitor your temperatures if you are concerned. I use CPUID HWMonitor to check my system temperatures. Just make sure when installing to not select any of the 3rd party software these monitors often come with.

Can you provide the Hardware ID of that Unknown device?
  1. Open Device Manager
  2. Right click on the Unknown device
  3. Click Properties
  4. Click the Details tab
  5. Change the Property to Hardware Ids
  6. Provide the first ID in your next post.
 
Ok, that's good to know. My Intel Core i7-6700HQ fluctuates from about 60C to 70C with a moderate load - is that what you would expect?

That driver is definitely part of the Thermal Framework. What happens if you install Dell's Intel driver now?

And max temperature for your processor is 100C, so as long as you're below 90C under heavy processor usage, you should be fine.

Directly installing the Dell driver yields the same results as installing the Intel driver, HOWEVER, after clicking the "OK" button on the "The setup program failed to install one or more device drivers. Setup will exit" dialog box (see screenshot in previous post), the following "success" message is displayed, but device manager still shows the unknown device.

You could try uninstalling all thermal framework drivers again. This time, instead of scanning for hardware changes, install the drivers from the Dell driver installation application.

If that doesn't work, I would recommend contacting Dell for support. There may be some issue with their hardware/driver packages on your system.

ok, I will give that a shot but I think all of these attempts are negatively affecting my Windows installation. Yesterday while typing an email, both of my external monitors (HDMI via USB Hub) went black & my two external (USB 3.0) drives were immediately disconnected. I assumed the problem was the docking station, so I removed it from the equation by plugging one monitor into the laptop's HDMI port & the USB drives directly into the laptop. Things were working smoothly for a while, and then the same problem occurred again. I checked the Device manager & found that the two "generic superspeed usb hub" entries were in error (yellow exclamation). Searching for new drivers found that the latest driver was already installed. I then rebooted and everything was fine again, and it has remained that way since last night.

Any idea of what this is, or how I could dig deeper to find the root cause using log files, crash reports, etc.? Can this be related to the work of getting the Intel Thermal driver working properly? Thanks in advance for your help.
 
Your USB/Monitor issue sounds like some type of power surge. What typically happens is the motherboard goes into an altered power state to protect itself, and peripherals fail to work until the system hardware is reset. Usually a system reboot will reset the hardware, but sometimes it requires all power to be removed from the system, e.g. disconnecting the AC adapter, battery, and holding down the power button for 15-30 seconds to complete the circuit and allow all power to fully drain.

I actually had my laptop fail to accept power from the AC adapter a couple days ago because I plugged in a universal power supply at the wrong voltage. The motherboard protected itself by keeping the circuit open and not allowing power from the power input until I removed the battery and let things reset. I know enough about electronics to be dangerous, but the people who design these circuits are smarter than I am. :thud::thud:


I do not think the issue with your USB/monitor is related to our driver tinkering. What you describe sounds more hardware than software related.

Well that certainly makes me feel better, and in fact, the speakers "popped" when the monitors & external hdd's stopped working, so a power spike does sound like a feasible explanation. Thank you for all of your help.
