[Win10 16299 x64] Windows Update keeps asking for a restart

Hello

I have searched for this issue and found a thread where nothing helps, but in the end a copy/paste of a registry entry did! So I am thinking, since I already have done everything what is in that thread this is also a solution for my problem. The problem being that I can not update Windows anymore due to Windows Update asking me to restart endlessly. Could someone please help me with this issue? I have Windows 10 Pro. Thanks a lot.

Hello and welcome to Sysnative! Do this, reboot and then tell me if the reboot prompt is gone.

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.


  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the attached file, SFCFixScript.txt, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFixScript.txt - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFixScript.txt.
  5. Drag the file SFCFixScript.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a log should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this into your next post for me to analyse please - put [CODE][/CODE] tags around the log to break up the text.

Alas. Thanks for your help, but this also did not help me. I hope there are some other stuff we can check out.
 
I am sorry. But I can not search for updates. It keeps displaying the message that there are updates pending, but a restart is needed.
 
FRST Fix
NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system
1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
2. Download attached file and save it to the Desktop.
Note. It's important that both files, FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work (in this case...the desktop).
3. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
4. Press the Fix button just once and wait. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
5. When finished FRST64 will generate a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please post the contents of it in your reply.

It used to be three updates that required restart. But now I have renamed that update folder in Windows System32 it is stuck with only one. Namely KB4089848. I read about this update that it is not compatible with every laptop. But I believe that it only the case with an intel atom processor. My laptop has a Intel Core i5 8th generation processor. What can you tell about this update?

In the list of installed updates there are also strange things happening. One of the security updates for Adobe Flash Player states it was installed on 1st of January 1601. Was that in the middle of the medieval ages? Another update has that same exact medieval date, KB4089848.

Hi. I tried to install all updates manually from scratch. Now there are 3 updates pending and waiting for a restart:
KB4074588
KB4088785
KB4089848

It seems as though all updates which require a restart fail and that it has nothing to do which updates are being installed. It looks like something is corrupted in the Windows software. Do you have any other ideas, or is a simple reinstall of my laptop the only way to go from here?
 
I have several ideas. Please provide more info:
Do updates install successfully and then fail at configuring and then the whole process starts again or you just have an endless reboot loop?
